Hi Kay,
What program do you use for your layouts? I use Photoshop Elements and when I'm complete and have saved the full file version, I then flatten the layers, and then do an unsharp mask at 85, 1, 4 and then "save for web"... in the save for web feature I change the layout to 600x600 pixels and then click change the percent to get as close to 150K as possible w/o going over and then save as the same file name but add web to the name so I know which one is the one to upload to the galleries...
