What are you reading week of Jan. 31?

What's the last book/books you finished?

I don't even want to say. It's been far too long since I've read a real book. I've started and not finished too many to count though.

What are you reading right now?

I'm hoping an easy romance novel will get me back into the reading habit!

Landline - Rainbow Rowell
Eh, it was ok. I left a review.

What are you reading right now?

Picking up either Liane Moriarty's The Husband's Secret
or Big Little Lies. I read her What Alice Forgot last week and LOVED it.

What's on your TBR?

Umm, too long to list BUT I do need to pick up Colleen Hoover's final Never Never book and after going to the theater TWICE last week :o to watch 5th Wave, I want to start that series.

What's the last book/books you finished?

I don't even remember. I took a little break from reading cause it was starting to feel like a chore. The holidays are always a hard time for me to find reading time, so I'm just now getting back to it.

I"m about 75% of the way through this. It's good but not a page-turner. It's told from lots of different perspectives, and that sorta bugs me.

What's on your TBR?

My TBR list is ridiculous. I buy books at a MUCH faster rate than I can read them. I could not buy anything for the next 5 years and still not run out of things to read.

Just got Big Little Lies from the library, so that'll probably be next.

Though I picked this up from Kindle First this morning, and it looked good:

I just finished reading Asylum by Madeleine Roux. It was a YA book and it was a very quick read. I felt like she wanted to write a creepy book but not too creepy that YA group wouldn't like and she kept giving too many hints at who the "bad guy" could be.

Next on my nightstand is Four by Veronica Roth. I read the rest of the series and I saw this one at the library the other day and thought I'd like to read it too.

To be read - 11/22/63 by Stephen King. It is ready at the library and I need to go pick it up.

What's the last book/books you finished?

The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison
https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1373039517l/17910048.jpg
This book was a great surprise..so different and just really good.

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1272824264l/8123171.jpg

I tackled this behemoth first thing this year...over 1400 pages y'all. It was SO good. If you love classics don't be scared..it's really good.

Elijah's Mermaid by Essie Fox

https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1363971762l/17668266.jpg

I saw this book on a booktube channel a while ago and it looked so interesting that I wanted to pick it up. I had to order it from the UK b/c it's not available in the states...I'm sad to say I was disappointed. It was just an okay read..nothing special. :/ Beautiful cover though

Assassin's Apprentice and Royal Assassin by Robin Hobb - books 1 and 2 in the Farseer Trilogy

https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1398083044l/21956219.jpghttps://d.gr-assets.com/books/1398594863l/22016387.jpg

So I love some good epic fantasy but I'd never read anything by Robin Hobb. These were good..and I've heard that her books get better as you go. I'm still deciding if I love her writing or not...we'll see.

The Witch of Napoli by Michael Schmicker

https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1418029843l/23710526.jpg

This was my least favorite read for January...it just didn't work for me. It was very short though.

Slammerkin by Emma Donoghue
https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1315155075l/44543.jpg

I loved this book. It was one of those that you start reading and you just don't want to put down..and even when it's over you're kind of still there with the characters in that world for a while. Really good and highly recommend if you like historical fiction.

The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making and The Girl Who Fell Beneath Fairyland and Led the Revels There by Catherynne M. Valente

https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1388179691l/9591398.jpghttps://d.gr-assets.com/books/1334547766l/13538708.jpg

Absolutely my favorite reads of January...and I even gave the first book 5 stars on Goodreads and it takes a LOT for me to give a book 5 stars. These are the first two books in the Fairyland Series (there are currently 4 published and a new one coming in March). If you love middle grade fantasy this is middle grade fantasy done absolutely right. It's heavily inspired by Narnia, Oz, Wonderland and various other magical storybook places...all about a girl named September who visits Fairyland and gets into all kinds of mischief which sounds like a usual trope..which it is..but the difference is Cat Valente's
writing which is outstanding. Wonderfully lyrical, funny, magical just perfect..I cannot recommend this series enough. :)

What are you reading right now?

Assassin's Quest (Farseer Trilogy #3) by Robin Hobb

https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1398595065l/22016392.jpg

Third and longest book in the series and good so far.

The Girl Who Soared Over Fairyland and Cut the Moon in Two (Fairyland #3)
by Catherynne M. Valente

The Girl Who Ruled Fairyland - For a Little While (Fairyland #0.5)
by Catherynne M. Valente

https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1328347723l/11869878.jpg

This is a prequel novella.

The Boy Who Lost Fairyland (Fairyland #4)by Catherynne M. Valente

https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1403270363l/18961361.jpg

And on Audible I'm planning on this one next...

My dd and I read the Divergent series but she didn't really enjoy Four (I mean the book. We BOTH enjoyed his character, LOL!) so you'll have to tell me, as an adult, what you thought of it.

11/22/63 is on my list too! Hopefully some time this month.

January Books:

Beautifully written book - very different from what I normally read.

My goal over the next few years is to read the Newberry Award Winners. This was absolutely amazing!!

https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1370917812l/47281.jpg
Without a doubt one of the best books I've ever read. Faith was reading it in class so I was going to follow along. Nope. Finished it in three days! Faith and I had some great discussions about the Holocaust.

I enjoyed this very much!!

As I posted this link I saw Nikki's rating of two stars!! Oh dear.....I found Libby and Misty's rating too. Maybe I'll stop while I'm only in chapter 2

Finished this

It was alright.

I'm reading this

I'm not half-way through it yet but I'm enjoying it.

Not sure what I'm going to read next. I'll have to see what kind of mood I'm in. I'm on a run of just "okay" books.

I know a lot of people hated it but I wasn't one of them. I LOVED Ready Player One and it wasn't at that level but I enjoyed this one as well.

Kjersti 02-01-2016 05:38 PM

Keely - I'm glad you said that because I like it so far.....

Valgal 02-01-2016 06:57 PM

ARGH... so many books, so little time.

JenM 02-01-2016 07:40 PM

I loved Ready Player One and while I didn't think Armada was as good it was still a really good read!! Enjoy it!

QuiltyMom 02-01-2016 08:18 PM

State Fair by Earlene Fowler. It's a Benni Harper mystery, part of a series where all the books are named after quilt blocks. I love them!

I hated this! I couldn't stop reading it, but then it just didn't end. : ( It left me feeling like I really wished I could have the hours I'd spend reading it BACK. Good story but awful ending, imo.

I LOVE Gretchen Rubin! The Happiness Project really impacted my life, and I love her podcast. I actually bought this book in print because I want to highlight and take notes and really get the most out of this book.

wow lots of great recommendations.

I can't even remember the last book I read :( I also have Four by Veronica Roth on stand by if I can get time. I underestimated how much having a toddler would cut into my reading time

I had to nearly give up reading when my kids were little, so I get it. Even when I did have time I was so tired I would fall asleep.
