A Gentleman in Moscow

Has anyone read the story? I am about 30% of the way through it, according to my Kindle, and I was really interested in it at first, but I am not sure I want to invest three time to read the rest of it if it’s just more of the same thing. I was just wondering if there’s any action in it or suspense or drama. Surely the author did not write an entire book about a man’s observations of life in a hotel. And yet Bill Gates recommended it...

I haven't read this one.

I quit on it after the first quarter of the book. I continue to see it on recommended book lists and often wonder if I should give it another shot.

I felt the same way I couldn't finish it.

I somehow missed this post...

I read this one and truly loved it...
even gave it 5 stars & I'm rather stingy with those.

I really enjoyed the writing - so veryvery much. It's definitely a winding tale and not incredibly fast-paced, but I loved the journey. How all the characters interlace together and propel his story. The core of the book is about how he comes to live in this prison disguised as a hotel, all that he has lost, and what he continues to lose/give up... all while gaining remarkable friendships and the discoveries he makes [about himself and those who share his orbit] through the years. there is so much tenderness in the beautiful bond he forges with Nina. so many wonderful little details to discover, appreciate and soak up... I loved getting lost in the language of this book and sucked into remarkable connections shared by the characters.

it's a slow starter, to be sure, but after I was about 1/3 of the way in I didn't want to put it down.
