Do you have to have an internet connection to cut? Does the free program only work if thru internet, like the Cricut Craft Room? Example: if I go away to scrapbook/craft there may be no internet access.

No, you do not need an internet connection to cut...only to download new cut files from their shop.
All you need is a laptop/computer and the usb cable or, if you can plan ahead and know what you will want to cut all you need is an SD card with your files on it.
