Netflix - Need suggestions for new series

Here are the types of TV shows that we like:

Eureka, Warehouse 13, and Castle.

Castle = love the mystery/who dunnit ... don't like the killing/dead people.

Eureka = love the geekiness and just everything about it.

Warehouse 13 = love the mystery. A little too suspenseful for me to watch right before bedtime (yes I am a wuss).

Alphas = was pretty good ... was just getting into it when the season ended.

I could use some suggestions for additional TV series that I could watch on Netflix. Don't think I could handle any medical show or something where there was bleeding all the time ... or another show with killing as the main feature.

I really would like something similar to Eureka ... I think that is my favorite. ...and of course they are discontinuing it.

Thanks for any ideas!

NeverendingJen 05-08-2012 08:47 AM

Sanctuary(not sure if it is on netflix, it's another SyFy one)

Personally, I'm still Furious that Eureka is ending. I was really furious at the beginning of the season with the twists they added, but its getting better.

nikkiARNGwife 05-08-2012 09:18 AM

Supernatural!

One of our favorite series and now seasons 1-6 are all streaming...Love those Winchester boys! :)

sarahbhb 05-08-2012 09:20 AM

Don't know if you like sitcoms or not but The IT Crowd is a funny geeky british comedy that we love here.

Psych is a fun mystery show...the 1st episode is a bit gory but after that it gets better.

maryinaz 05-08-2012 09:39 AM

White Collar
NUMB3ERS (Sharon, I love the interaction between the brothers since I have all boys)
The Guardian
Army Wives (not really loving the current season though)
Friday Night Lights
Downton Abbey
Burn Notice

More intense:
Damages (violence)
Bones (a bit gory, but also lighthearted)
The Tudors (sex and nudity)

I love the IT Crowd! Psych was going to be my suggestion too. It has the mystery of Castle without all the gore and the quirky fun-vibe of Eureka.

webseitler 05-08-2012 09:48 AM

Are you a Doctor Who fan?

Kenzi 05-08-2012 09:49 AM

I was so going to suggest Psych too! It's a good one. I love all the random 80's and 90's reference they make lol!

Darcy Baldwin 05-08-2012 09:49 AM

I second Bones - if you can handle the autopsy scenes that can be a little gorey - the interaction between characters fits right up your alley.

Psych is also lighthearted fun mystery.

Sarah8914 05-08-2012 09:52 AM

We're going to try out Sherlock!

erica zane 05-08-2012 10:23 AM

I was gonna say Psych & Doctor Who also :)

KateD 05-08-2012 10:25 AM

I really like Bones (except for the most recent season) and also like Lie to Me.

WendyBird 05-08-2012 10:26 AM

Psych, Bones and Numb3rs are some of my faves!

Yes! I need to watch these on something other than TNT because I know they skip some and I forget what happened. ;)

I love Supernatural!

TracerM 05-08-2012 10:50 AM

I would suggest Psych, Numb3rs, and Firefly. I like all of these. I have watched Numb3rs and Pysch on Netflix and am currently watching Firefly.

glumirk 05-08-2012 11:24 AM

Another one for Psych. That's our absolutely favorite tv show! Amusing, mostly clean (which matters to us), if there is gore one of the characters is running off screen to throw up, that kind of thing. Hilarious, whodunnit type show.

Misty Cato 05-08-2012 11:27 AM

I like Psych and White Collar. Right now DH and I are watching Doc Martin which is a hysterical, but oddly touching British comedy. I wasn't so sure after the first episode, but 4 episodes in, I'm hooked.

Darcy Baldwin 05-08-2012 11:29 AM

Misty - and it gets better :)

maryinaz 05-08-2012 12:16 PM

I love Netflix threads. :) Especially when we are heading into the last of the regular TV seasons.

Just added Supernatural and Psych to my instant queue.

YES! Love that show, too!

scrap2day 05-08-2012 12:31 PM

I the same with you about Castle. You can hear me saying "I wish Beckett and Castle just worked in a bookstore. This would be a really good show without the murders."

I was going to also suggest Psych. Funny 80s references and rarely scary.

KateD 05-08-2012 12:39 PM

I just realized that Quincy, ME and Columbo are both on streaming. I used to really enjoy them - I may have to try watching them again. It's kind of hit or miss with those older shows, though. Sometimes I still enjoy them and other times I wonder why I ever watched them in the first place ;)

Jennilyn 05-08-2012 12:45 PM

Justified with Timothy Olyphant!

YepBrook 05-08-2012 03:18 PM

This is very good to know. It's tough during the summer without anything good to watch. :)

mlewis 05-08-2012 04:57 PM

The Office

jessica31876 05-08-2012 05:09 PM

my favorite show is Criminal MInds but I do not think it is on netflix. We own the whole series (except for the current season) but will buy it as well. I also like Hawaii Five-O and all the CSI's. Not sure if those are on netflix though. Oh and I LOVED Charmed. When it came on netflix we had a Charmed marathon where that was all we watched until we finished the entire show. It took weeks LOL. My sons were so sick of Charmed by the time it was over

mdbsktcase 05-08-2012 06:27 PM

1.LOVED Friday Night Lights. This is a MUST even if you don't love sports. You will love it!
2. Jericho - GREAT show. It is over now but really good.
3. This one is my hubbie doesn't love but I'm telling you it is sooooooo good! Really, really good! It is called One Tree Hill. It starts in high school and goes through adulthood. The series just ended so they will all be on Netflix soon. I'm on season six and they just keep getting better.
4. Next on my list is Downtown Abbey. But I don't want my One Tree Hill to end. It will be soooo sad! :) Weird I know.

I have watched all of FRIENDS up until Netflix didn't have the rest of it ... and I've got about 1 1/2 seasons left of Beverly Hills 90210 ... so One Tree Hill might be one I like too.

Thanks for the suggestions.

ROFL ... funny that you should ask ... I have been TRYING to get into Doctor Who ... in an effort to latch on to it ... I have gone to the hackerspace on about 3 Friday nights to watch Doctor Who with a couple of guys that are big fans...they pick their favorite episodes and we watch them.

I haven't quite latched on to it like I thought I would ... not quite sure why ... for some unknown reason it reminds me of the old show "Lost in Space" which I could never get into (see I watched robots way back then too) ... there is just something not clicking. My boys haven't seemed to click with it either.

I thought that about a few old TV series ... watched them about 2 years ago and thought ... hmmm must have been back when we only had 3 channels to choose from ... so not many choices on what to watch ... maybe that is why we watched them. LOL

Sharon Kay 05-08-2012 10:24 PM

Oh wow on all the responses!!! I will have to start reading up on them ...

One of my favorite TV shows (and I bought the entire series) is Gilmore Girls ... YOU all got me watching it a few years ago and I bought them all! ;-)

Love the banter back and forth between the mother & daughter (I have a very PUNNY sense of humor) ... would love to find something like that that appeals to my punny side ... without being slapstick type comedy.

Suggestions?

I have 3 DVDs out at a time ... plus can watch instant streaming ... I like having 2 different series going on at a time.

Darcy Baldwin 05-09-2012 04:51 AM

Well, if you like back and forth - West Wing. best. show. ever.

And which Dr. Who are you watching? I'd really suggest starting with the new ones with the 9th Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) and going forward - not delving into the old ones from the 60's and 70's. I never ever liked the show until David Tennant came along - the Tenth Doctor. THEN it clicked and I love the show now - but still don't watch the old ones.

Sharon Kay 05-09-2012 06:54 AM

Calling all Doctor Who fans .... have you seen TODAY's shirt here for Doctor Who fans?? I wouldn't be surprised if it sells out fast ...

Hmmm don't think I have ever heard of West Wing ... will look that one up.

I really don't know which Dr. Who ... I remember there was a discussion on which ones to start with ... I thought it was the newer ... but no clue which Doctor is in it ... I'll have to ask ...

Aaaaaaagreeed. The 11th has finally grown on me. But it took me a long time to believe him when he would yell "I'm the Doctor!" :glare:

My husband has this one:

Coila 05-09-2012 03:33 PM

I love watching entire seasons on Netflix! So far I've watched:

Burn Notice
Friday Night Lights
Prision Break (this has a lot of grusomeness, if that is a word, so you may not like this
Heroes
Desparate Housewives

Hmmm can't think of what else. But I liked those ones!

Ha summer is when I get caught up with everything else that got pushed aside for Glee, Walking Dead, Vampire Diaries, The Voice. I need a break! :)

thompsonc2007 05-09-2012 08:59 PM

Love White Collar, NCIS, NCIS LA, Burn Notice, and Leverage!

maryinaz 05-09-2012 09:01 PM

Oh, I also LOVED Prison Break. Until the last season...and then I didn't even finish it. First season was awesome though.

Ok now that Darcy has told me there are so many different "Doctor Who" ... I now understand the t-shirt ... I didn't when it showed up on shirt woot. :p

sarahbhb 05-10-2012 08:28 AM

Sharon, Tom Baker was always my favorite. He wore the long multicolored scarf and was the fourth Doctor.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...rth_Doctor.jpg

I haven't seen any of the new shows but Dr Who was something we watched as a family when I was growing up. Our PBS station would run each episode each evening (each story had multiple episodes) and then on Sunday morning they would run the entire story. So we watched every storyline twice.

We did start the first episode of the new Dr. Who as a family..but it was shortly before DD's bedtime and she wanted to watch it with us, so we stopped it and just never started it again. Should see if DD and DH still want to watch it and put it on our viewing list for the weekend.

Amy Carey 05-10-2012 08:23 PM

:sigh: THE GILMORE GIRLS!! ACK. I have two seasons of them on DVD. I must renew my quest to get them all and rewatch. I adored that show so much. Nothing has ever been quite as good to me since. I am also a big fan of Friday Night Lights but I'm trying to drag out watching the last few shows cause I don't want it to end. Im a big Castle fan too..I realized the other night all my fave shows were ending all at the same time and I'm pretty bummed :( GCB, desperate housewives, Body of Proof, Grey's .. aCK.
I think during the off season I'm gonna do Private Practice. I only saw season 1 all the way through and I saw the other day they are all on Netflix.

ryliesmom 05-12-2012 08:55 PM

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've added several to our queue.

We have really enjoyed IT Crowd and Doc Martin. I like Sherlock and LOVE Downton Abbey. Trying to get into Doctor Who. DD likes them; to me they're ok but not my favorite. I seem to love a lot of the British shows and we've enjoyed watching ones we'd never see without Netflix.

Ladies here suggested Gilmore Girls ... watched a few online ... and was hooked ... Borders ran a 40% off practically anything coupon and I picked up the entire line of Gilmore Girls ... actually have the "suitcase" right below my desk ... ready to grab and watch whenever.

Wish Netflix would get in the missing disks of Friends so I could finish it.

Getting close to finishing Beverly Hills 90210 ... think I have a season left ...

Thanks everyone...I'll be busy watching for a long time!
