Journaling on busy backgrounds.

Do you do it?
If so, show us how.

nesser1981 09-03-2013 07:38 PM

I use those things Julie Released. The color wash things. Not on the computer, so I don't know the exact name

eranslow 09-03-2013 07:48 PM

I use paint:

Or I change the font color to one that stands out:

https://www.sweetshoppecommunity.com...herange700.jpg

Or use Julie's Paint Wash:
https://www.sweetshoppecommunity.com...parkfun700.jpg

Or I journal directly on it - and use the pattern as a guide:

That's what I've done :)

Mari Koegelenberg 09-03-2013 07:49 PM

Paint yup! Love gesso type of splats!

Lindsay 09-03-2013 08:14 PM

I use Julie's paint wash too to mute the pattern.

I use Julie's paint wash too!

emmasmommy 09-03-2013 09:18 PM

here's some of mine. I have a passion for busy backgrounds and lots o' journaling.

I really like using paper strips
https://www.sweetshoppecommunity.com...-masks-web.jpg

when it's something I don't REALLY want people to read, I just chuck it on there
https://www.sweetshoppecommunity.com...6/freedom1.jpg

a little journaling card
https://www.sweetshoppecommunity.com...bulous-web.jpg

and lastly...I just make the font dark enough so you can see it LOL

I will often type my journaling and then select it with a feather of like 20 px and then on a new layer below I put a shape with the background color and lower the opacity until I like the look.

another paint wash user...

misfitinmn 09-03-2013 10:00 PM

Um...it turns out I don't really journal right on busy backgrounds.

The last time I even journaled right on a patterned background was this one back in March and even it is not super busy:

oh! And I guess I used paint, too.

catgoddess 09-03-2013 10:26 PM

I rarely journal right on a busy paper, but if I do, I use paint underneath it so it stands out. I also add a journal card or tuck it on a plain piece of paper.

I use a darker font :)

https://www.sweetshoppecommunity.com...13FairPlay.jpg

sometimes I just make the font bigger
https://www.sweetshoppecommunity.com...earlessley.jpg

I also change my ffont color light if it is a darker background
https://www.sweetshoppecommunity.com...tonBubbles.jpg

Jengerbread88 09-03-2013 10:38 PM

Sometimes I make all or part of the background lighter by overlaying another paper on it.

https://www.sweetshoppecommunity.com...herelayout.jpg

Other times I just make my sentiment really big. Like, title-sized big. And I throw in some WA as part of my journaling to make it stand out more.

https://www.sweetshoppecommunity.com...7032013web.jpg

I'm also with others who journal on a card or on top of paint, and make sure I'm adding as much contrast as I can.

Wow these pages are all gorgeous! I sure loved seeing them all and get some ideas - thanks for sharing!!

Another Paint Wash user here! Love those!

lorryfach 09-04-2013 06:28 AM

I avoid the background and journal on a photo:
https://www.sweetshoppecommunity.com...e_the_girl.jpg
or a journal card:
https://www.sweetshoppecommunity.com..._living_it.jpg
or a paper strip:
https://www.sweetshoppecommunity.com..._in_Canada.jpg
or lots of paper strips:
https://www.sweetshoppecommunity.com..._for_three.jpg
But if I want to go right on the busy paper, I'll find a less busy part to journal on:
https://www.sweetshoppecommunity.com...red_moment.jpg
or I put a glow or stroke on the text (I know it doesn't look like much, but at full-size I swear this is totally legible! I am way too anal to make it not be, ha!)

up closer:

http://alteredsky.net/sample2.png
I've also used blends, paints, and masks but I don't have any examples to show off. Maybe soon. ;)

sarahbhb 09-04-2013 10:11 AM

I use paint a lot as well.

On this one I think I just made a white rectangle in my scrapping software (I may have used white paper not 100% certain) and then just made it a bit transparent so that the pattern shows through just a little bit.

color of my heart 09-04-2013 10:42 PM

i do the paint wash thing too. either that, or i put the journaling on a card or a solid layer.

MommaTrish 09-04-2013 11:20 PM

*cough*journalingonjournalingcardsdoesn'tcount*cou gh*
lol!!!

Yes, I use paint sometimes to journal on busy backgrounds, or I work the journaling in with the background design. I also will use a slight stroke light Lorry.
