They don't call me "PETA" for nothin....

so, i'm on my way to JoAnn Fabrics w/ one of my boys this afternoon.... (he wants to buy fabric to make a HAT and a shirt...uh okay), so we're driving down a busy road (like those busy 4 lane-ers) and then the traffic in front of my slows down and starts going around something, when i got up to it, i saw it was a little DOG in the street! So i stopped the car right there and got out of the car and put the dog in our car and pulled around into a parking lot. I saw he had no collar on so there was no # to call... so we headed back home w/ him. He just curled up by Josh's feet on the ride home.

So, then we get home and i open the back door and then run over to open the gate to our back yard, then i hear a THUD... then i see a LIMPING dog! OY! so i guess he must have fallen out as we was getting out!

ANYWAY so we got him in the yard... he came through the house as i got him water and food and then we realized he had FLEAS! AND A TICK! So back out he went and I called the emergency animal clinic... and they said to get Advantix flea stuff and that they could see if he was microchipped whenever i wanted to bring him in. Seriously the poor thing is COVERED in fleas, like insanely covered! :( i feel so bad cuz now he's just stuck outside while the flea spray does it's thing.

DH is none to pleased that we have this dog here...... what was i suppose to do though just drive around the dog and leave him to get hit by a car!?!?!? how the heck could i have done that?!?!

Anywho, so just hoping that the fleas don't infest our house and that we can get him cleared up so i can get him in my car and to the vet or whatever. W/ the amount of fleas i doubt he has an owner.. so who knows what other illnesses he might have... :(

send some flea free vibes our way please! ;)

Good luck and hopefully the poor pup will be ok!!

kbbeale 05-17-2010 12:07 AM

Gotta help out where ya can, right? Makes me sick to see people just drive by an animal that is obviously in danger - thank you for stopping for him. Hope he is ok and Im sure he's just happy to be SAFE right now. Hugs to you!

Good for you, stopping for the poor dog. It drives my husband crazy that I stop for dogs that I see out. I hope you get the fleas taken care of soon and the you are able to find it's real home if he is chipped or a good home for it, if you can't keep it yourself. Good luck.

lauren grier 05-17-2010 12:51 AM

poor dog :[ I hope he doesn't have parvo or something like that.. LOL i watch animal cops too much.. so many of the dogs they find have parvo.

4noisyboys 05-17-2010 01:25 AM

All of my cats have been rescued!! Granted, I didn't grab them out of the middle of the street though!! One was stolen by one of my boys though...he told me he found her, but come to find out, her owners were some druggies that lived near my son, and he knew they weren't taking care of her! She's one of our lovies now...she's has a good life!

nun69 05-17-2010 01:26 AM

good for you for being a good citizen and I hope he gets a clean bill of health and the fleas die quickly!

nietis 05-17-2010 06:49 AM

You're such a sweetie, L! I hope the fleas clear up real soon so you can get him to the vet :)

jessica31876 05-17-2010 07:12 AM

so sweet!! We have rescued a dove from a cat outside (he is a wild cat), several turtles in the highway and a big birdie who got hit by a car. We have a wildlife rescue near our house that we can take them all to and they have all been ok and reeleased.

Lauren Reid 05-17-2010 11:33 AM

what the freak is PARVO La?!

So i took him to the vet this morning and he gave me a dose of Advantix for him, so i threw that on him and they gave me a leash so i had something for him. The checked him for a chip, but didn't find one. they gave me the number of a missing dog hotline or something that i can put him on in case someone's looking for him.

dr. said he thinks he's 8-9 yrs old and looks like a Shibu Ino mix.

Not sure what i'm going to do now... there's a no-kill shelter near us, so if dh is set on him going, i could give them a ring. We'll see what happens. I'm just glad he didn't get hit by a car.

Love all your rescue stories too! Our Great Dane is from a rescue as well, but we weren't the one's who literally scooped her off the street! ;)

jessica31876 05-17-2010 12:01 PM

he looks so sweet. I was going to suggest maybe Akita but Shiba Inu also sounds about right. Maybe you could find someone who is willing to take him or wear your husband down with the sheer cuteness of the doggy? ;)

ETA:so is that not the dog you found in the picture? I should read a little more thoroughly LOL

Lauren Reid 05-17-2010 12:09 PM

bwwhahahah no that's not the dog. I'll go out and take a pic of him and post later on though. :)

and yeah, i'm thinking that after the fleas are gone, the dog might seem cuter to hubs. ;)

jessica31876 05-17-2010 12:23 PM

Lauren this stuff works wonders on fleas:

http://www.soapsgonebuy.com/ProductD...2&Show=ExtInfo

We had gotten a cat which was infested and we had carpets so it was REALLY bad. we sprinkled it on the floor and let it sit for a few hours while we were out then vaccuumed it up and the fleas were dead.

ColleenSwerb 05-17-2010 12:25 PM

Thankfully I've never had to deal with fleas. Ick. Hopefully the short time he was inside helps prevent them from hanging out on your couch. Kudo's to you for scooping him up! I'll only ever rescue I think, I just find it so much more rewarding. Good luck wearing down the hubs! I've been working on Jordan for 3 years now to get a second dog and he is NOT budging, lol.

PS~If he looks like that white guy, he's DEF got Shiba Inu in him. I love Shiba's. :)

Lauren Reid 05-17-2010 12:54 PM

oooh thank you jessica, i didn't realize that plain ol' borax would work! i'll see if my market has some!

Gabbina 05-17-2010 01:09 PM

You really did a great thing...
I did the same thing, she was a teeny tiny dog, all alone in a parking lot.
Now she's still tiny, just 10 years older.
But we're so happy no one asked to have it back and I couldn't be more happy to have found her.

Good for you for helping the poor dog, I don't get how people can just abandon them(if that's what happened) :(

**sending lots of flea free vibes to you**

chloe 05-17-2010 04:06 PM

It's so great that you stopped and are taking care of him! I'm glad he's in good hands. ***flea free vibes to you***

I once rescued three little wild kittens. Their mom had probably been hit by a car (DBF saw her wounded but she was gone before we could help her) and the three babies were around our house but we didn't know where. I searched for them, hoping they were old enough to survive without their mom. And the next day I found one of them that fell into some oily product that DBF had in his workshop. Gosh, I had to clean the poor kitten in my shower with dish soap... twice! He was cold, shaking, and so miserable. I thought he couldn't eat by himself so I had to feed him for 3 days before the shelter would open (it was a holiday weekend). When we finally brought him to the shelter he was all cute and fluffy again, so adorable. And as soon as he was in the shelter he started eating by himself! LOL And I found his brother and sister the next days, so they were all safe and got adopted really quickly, they were so cute!! Here's the oily one (after I washed him... twice! poor thing!)

Don't pay attention to the big ugly thing behind the cute kitten! :p

Julie Billingsley 05-17-2010 04:11 PM

ah, what a sweetheart you are for rescuing the dog! I hope someone will be delighted you've found their beloved pet. If it is a Shiba, they are known to run and at all times should be on a leash or in a secure fenced area. Bet the dog got loose or jumped a fence. Shibas are expensive dogs and I'd say in general they aren't let loose on purpose.

I want to see the pic of the dog!! I'm set on getting a Shiba and can't wait until the time is right for us. :)

So awesome of you Lauren - There is hope - Advantix works like a champ
