Currently Reading Week of 3/13

What's the last book you finished?
What are you reading right now?
What's on your TBR?

What's the last book you finished?

The Night Watch by Sarah Waters - I wasn't a fan and only gave it 2 stars.
https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1394331077l/550720.jpg

Clara's War by Clara Kramer Holocaust Survivor Memoir - 5 stars
https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1328332635l/6624986.jpg

On audiobook I finished The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss - amazing, 5 stars
https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1386166425l/17220138.jpg

and then read the Novella The Slow Regards of Silent Things also by Patrick Rothfuss which was also amazing - 5 stars
https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1398466695l/21535271.jpg

I also listened to The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood narrated by Claire Danes and it was really good. Adult Dystopian and excellent narration - 4 stars.
https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1295227157l/974154.jpg

What are you reading right now?

Voyager by Diana Gabaldon (3rd in the Outlander Series) this one is a chunker at over 1000 pages so it will take me the week at least.
https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1388191457l/10987.jpg

I started working my way through Rogues which is a collection of Short Stories by 21 different authors including George R.R. Martin, Patrick Rothfuss (his story is about Bast from The Kingkiller Chronicle), Gillian Flynn, Scott Lynch, Neil Gaiman etc. I've read 2 and will read a couple in between books. So far Rothfuss's was excellent, Gillian Flynn's was not.
https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1405605878l/21519479.jpg

And on audible I've got about an hour left on The End of the Affair by Graham Greene narrated by wait for it...Colin Firth...the book is excellent but even if it was just Colin Firth reading the dictionary I think it would be good :)

What's on your TBR?

I haven't totally decided what I'm getting to next...probably:

Horns by Joe Hill
https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1402958805l/6587879.jpg

I'm still reading Life After Life -- I keep waiting for it to pick up pace, but it's dragging on and on. I may have to put this one aside, sadly.

Next up, I'm thinking about something light and fun or YA:

but ultimately, I never seem to like her books/stories. 2 stars
https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1348922866l/6065182.jpg

usually I'd rather light myself on fire than read an OBOMC offering [I don't enjoy crying while I read].
but this one was outstanding [and not torturously sad]... 4 stars

I've been reading "thinky feely" books lately.

I finished Gilead and loved it.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...SH20_OU01_.jpg

Then, I read The Kite Runner (finally!) and loved it:
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...SH20_OU01_.jpg

And, now I'm reading Jayber Crow and loving it.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...SH20_OU01_.jpg

I should finish this weekend. After that, I'm not sure, but I think I might tackle a few of the books that I've gotten from Kindle First. I don't I've actually read any of those books yet, so it's time. Does anyone have any favorites that they got through Kindle First?

Just finished The Paying Guests by Sarah Waters. It was just ok. I think my expectations were too high.

Next up, The Pearl the Broke It's Shell by Nadia Hashimi.

I had a hard time getting through that one too.

I finally started reading Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare yesterday. My daughter has been asking me to read it for weeks. I was quickly hooked and I'm already almost halfway through. Tomorrow I will just be scrapping and reading (oh, yeah, and grocery shopping and taking my other daughter to a birthday party). :D

eranslow 03-13-2015 11:43 PM

Here's what I've been up to :)

I finished Still Alice and loved it.
https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1236089972l/2153405.jpg

Currently reading:

Dragonfly in Amber (2nd of the Outlander series) Why are these books so long?! LOL She is definitely very detailed in her descriptions! I'm about a quarter of the way thru.

https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1393788871l/5364.jpg

also reading this with Blake (my 7 year old). So enjoying it! But man is it hard to not just sit and read ahead!

Glad to know about Life After Life. It's been on my TBR list for a while. Thinking I should move it down further. LOL

Lyd, I actually read one last week that I got from Kindle First that I really liked. It was just a light, easy read that didn't involve a lot of thinking. It was called Wreckage. I actually really liked it a lot and kept avoiding real life to get back to it. LOL

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon....PL._UY250_.jpg

I also read The Right Society last week, and sadly, I did NOT like it as much. I was hopeful because the idea behind the story was intriguing, but the writing felt very... amateurish. The characters were flat, and the whole thing just felt forced.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...SH20_OU01_.jpg

I'm actually between books right now because I am first in line for 2 different ebooks from the library. I am usually a slow reader, so I didn't want to be in the middle of something when one of those came through. I'm getting antsy, so if they don't come through soon, I may have to choose something quick to get me through.

These are the 2 I've got on hold -

The Martian by Andy Weir

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...SH20_OU01_.jpg

The Street Lawyer by John Grisham (I love a good Grisham novel every once in a while)

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...SH20_OU01_.jpg

If those don't come through soon, I might start Ready Player One. It doesn't sound like something I'd choose for myself, but I've heard SO many positive reviews about it.

I picked up Wreckage too, so maybe I'll do that one next.

I finished The Everyday Happy Herbivore and The Happy Herbivore Cookbooks. I am currently reading/listening to:

The First Fifteen Harry August (last 1.5 hours!), Second book of Game of Thrones, and The Pegasus Secret.

I want to read next:
Before Happiness by Shawn Achor
The Perfect Witness by Iris Johansen
Whole: Rethinking Nutrition by T. Colin Campbell

Jjriward 03-14-2015 07:13 PM

Sorry I'm not fancy with the pics, but I finished Dark Places by Gillan Flynn the other day and started American Sniper by Chris Kyle. Haven't decided what I want to read next...

picked it up today, Nikki, Thanks! I really loved his writing style in the Literary Souls, and hope this one will be similar.
You should def pick up Life in Outer Space by Melissa Keil - similar vein as Rowell's books.

lingovise 03-14-2015 10:52 PM

I'll be interested to see how you [Nikki & Erin] hold up with the Outlander series. I got up to book three [Voyager] and completely stalled afterwards. I like them well enough, but good grief, I feel like she's writing to meet a page quota. So. Many. Words. yeesh, Digress much??

& Player One is worth the read, Libster!

nikkiARNGwife 03-15-2015 06:27 PM

Thanks for the recommendation I'll add it to my list...

This is my 2nd attempt at the Outlander series..I quit half way through the 2nd book the first time. Then I watched the show on starz and decided to try again. I enjoy her writing style and the characters but yes she is long-winded. I thought half of Dragonfly in Amber could have been cut.

Ok, I had to update. I just finished this, and it DEFINITELY lived up to the hype! Such a fun, fast-paced, easy read. 5 stars!
