September 2019: Passport FAQ

If you have any questions regarding THIS month's Passport challenges, please post them here.

We have a wonderful team and community here at SSD....
so someone is sure to get back to you ASAP with answers to anything and everything related to our Passport Challenge System!

Here is a list of this month's challenge prompts for easy reference:

#1. One Little Word : Eureka!
You can use this word as/in your title work, within your journaling, or simply let it inspire the direction of your layout.

#2. Product : Scrap a layout using a kit, bundle or template from our Back To School section!

#3. Featured : Allie & Misty
Our featured designer articles have been expanded since we started our alphabet inspired series, and are showcased on the blog each time a new designer goes into the spotlight. Your challenge is to use any solo product from one of our featured designers this month PLUS discover something from either Allie or Misty's interviews this month to use as inspiration for a layout, be sure to tell us what inspired you in your gallery comments!

The following are a few ideas on how you may glean inspiration from a FD interview... Using this interview with Meg [featured in December] ... You might be inspired by the red and white cookie jars in her kitchen to scrap a red & white layout. Maybe you'd like to include the quote she shared “The Best Thing About Memories Is Making Them” on your page, maybe you were inspired by the letter “G” to scrap your own OLW starting with the letter G... or perhaps you might simply want to lift one of the layouts created by the Babes to show off the FD freebie. It’s totally up to YOU to decide how you'd want to be loosely inspired by one of our FD blog posts.

#4. Inspired By : Smashbooks!
Search “smash book" or “smashbook” on pinterest and create your own digital page inspired by this memory keeping trend.

#5. List : Favorite Life Lessons
Create a list of some of your favorite life lessons and scrap it!

#6. Leaving Love :
Leave love on 15 layouts in the gallery and then post the link to each in your tracker thread.
Create your own place marker by using your favorite layout you've left love for during the month to "hold" that spot on your card ♥
Right click on a page in the gallery and save... follow by resizing this saved image to 97 X 97 before adding it to your Passport tracker image.

#7. Photography : Go Macro!
Sometimes the best way to learn something, is to get up close and really study it. Use macro photography to get up close in an image and scrap it!

#8. Quote : Use the following quote on your page.
“Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.” ― Pablo Picasso

#9. Seasonal : September is National Sewing Month!
To celebrate, create a layout that uses stitching in a big way!

#10. Typography : Use any of these fantastic Back To School fonts.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Nn...VEngoPLzw=s412

#11. Wild Card : Scrap anything you'd like for this challenge ♥

#12. Composition : 2 Focal Points
Create a page featuring both a big photo background coupled with a smaller photo cluster.
http://kimstuff.mrbdesign.com.au/ima...Wild--free.jpg

#13. Journal : Conversations or Dialogues
You can learn a lot from talking to people. Use this idea to create a page which captures a conversation or uses dialogue rather than narrative in your journaling.

#14. Currently : Wondering...

#15. Color : Scrap with this month’s color swatch.
It should be obvious that the page you've created was inspired by the colors featured in the swatch image posted below.
** You don’t necessarily have to use all of the colors shown [use 2, or 3, or all 5] **
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...473c822373.jpg

#16. Rewind / Flashback : Art Journaling
This trend is intimidating for a lot of people, but dig deep, pull out the digital paint and ephemera and learn something new to create your own art journal masterpiece!

#17. Scrap Stash : Celebrate the Primary Colors
Use 3 or more different kits to create a layout celebrating the primary colors, Red, Blue & Yellow. Uses of Black & White are ok too!

#18. Scraplift : Hosted on the Blog
On the first Sunday of each month, Sugarbabe Kim E. will host an inspiring Scraplift Challenge on the SSD Blog.
You have the entire month to play along and complete your page.

To keep in mind while you're scrapping...
These prompts are written and created with fairly broad themes/concepts in mind and I think that personal interpretation is key. You can certainly approach a prompt literally, or I encourage you to think about it in a different way ... take a creative approach on ways to apply prompts so that they'll work for you and your family.

You want us to use just Red, Blue and Yellow (with black and white) Or are we allowed to use ROYGBIV as I think they too are primary (right??)

Just the primary colors (with b/w accents if desired)... here's a bit of color theory for those not familiar:
Primary colors include red, blue and yellow. Primary colors cannot be mixed from other colors. They are the source of all other colors.
Secondary colors are mixed from two primary colors adjacent to each other on the color wheel. The secondary colors are orange, green and violet.

Actually, my girls told me that I knew this because I taught them this when they were in Kindergarten! Apparently this is one of those of things you forget when you don't use it. I mean in all fairness, it's been 10 years since I taught kindergarten to them and some things just go out the window after some time of not being used!

So thanks again for the REMINDER about primary colors!

lol, Wendy :D That out the window meme is a100% accurate portrayal of my memory!!

icindi 09-01-2019 08:36 PM

For the typography, the fonts linked seem to be different than the ones shown in the preview. Which ones are we supposed to use?

I'll say you're free to use either option. They're all back to school fonts, so it's up to you to choose which one you like. I think the image we used for the example no longer links to a webpage, but you can do a manual search for the font names, or just click on the link and use one of those.

icindi 09-02-2019 02:28 PM

Thanks, Jacinda!

I think all of those are great samples of a smash book. Can't wait to see what you come up with!

Can anyone recommend a good set of stitches... brushes/actions?? I have some but they don't look nearly as nice as the ones in the examples.

immaculeah 09-05-2019 11:46 AM

Hi Stacy. When it comes to stitches, I highly recommend browsing Erica Zane's shop - you will find TONS of her templates with stitches. Here are just a few examples:

Hope that helps!

StacyLynn 09-05-2019 01:11 PM

Thanks Leah. I did see all her great stitching templates, (saved a few to my wish list too) but it wasn't quite what I had in mind for this page. I was thinking more free hand-ish.....

Yes, also journalling. Think of your creative journal when you were in high school.

My daughter had a smashbook years ago. She would put in dried flowers, ticket stubs to like the movies, concerts, etc. Imagine, if you will, walking down the aisle of Michaels and you see all those stickers, tabs, etc (think of the Easy Prints,) stuff like that-- you attach memorable stuff to a journal/notebook. You doodle on it. You color it, you paint it. You make that book yours with YOUR memories. That's what a smash book is, because at the end, you are smashing it all shut in one journal. Things are just thrown on/in there. It's reckless. It's the beginning of scrapping for a teenager. It's memories stuffed in there for a mom overwhelmed with her newborn and toddler....

If you want to get technical, basically if you shoved all the stuff of my siggy inside the journal, that would be my smashbook

Mommyish has a wonderful 2-part action set called:
Stitching Action 2015 - $8.00
Stitching Action 2015 pt 2 T & V Stitches - $8.00
They are AMAZING. I love using them and have used them for my stitching challenge.

There is also this stitching set (there are two of them) in this bundle:
https://dealjumbo.com/downloads/supe...oshop-toolkit/

It's currently on sale for $7 if you use coupon code CRS7. But it's only available at that price through Friday.

Can someone please remind me if:
1. We can use a two scoops or triple dips with one designer who's no longer here;
2. We can use kit collab (fwp) from sweetshoppe designers even if they're not in the store;

Sorry, I know this was already asked but I can't somehow find it from the other threads. I worry that I might be doing it but wasn't allowed. Thanks in advance.

I know you can use the FWP collabs. I use those all the time. I'd think the same for the scoops as long as one of the other designers is still here? But might want to get clarification on that for sure.

Both of what you mentioned are okay to use for the challenges, Cherry. :)

not a question, just an opinion

I really LOVE that we get to pick our font between a list this month! Thank you!

Leablahblah 09-19-2019 03:09 PM

I'm wondering if we can change the rules for the "quote" layout. I always find it hard to scrap a quote. I use it as inspiration for my layout but I don't actually like putting quotes in my layouts. I'd rather tell the story with my own words.
So my question is: Can we just use the quote as inspiration?

I do better when I'm told specifically what to do, otherwise I just overthink it!

oooh!!! Good question!!! I usually struggle with the quote and always throw it on to a journal card. This month was perfect because it was art-related and I was able to use it as an excuse to scrap her artwork!

For that specific prompt, the rule is set to use the quote on your page. You can always just save a page with the quote for the gallery/challenge sake and remove/change it accordingly for your own printing afterwards. I think this is pretty reasonable, since most of the challenge prompts are open to your own interpretation.

That's actually what I did for this one. Just wanted to remove the hassle and not feel too constricted by such a specific quote. But... nevermind! lol
