ACDSee..best deal

Anyone know where to get the best deal on ACDSee? I am thinking of finally buying it, I think it would save TONS of time.

BrattyMeg 06-22-2008 10:29 PM

pretty sure it's on sale @ their site..

ACDSee

Kimberly's Mommy 06-22-2008 10:43 PM

ok I have to ask what you all do exactly with ACDSee? How does it help you with organizing your kits and what not?

AmyM 06-23-2008 12:02 AM

So many people love that program. I wish I could have made it work for me but my computer is just too old for it. It crashed a lot and was a major space hog and I don't have much space.
I use the Gina Miller organizing method- sorta. Works for me. Took forever to get it together but man am I glad I did. Of course if ACDsee and Mr.Dell had gotten along I would have went that route.

Kimberly's mommy- it's for organizing and tagging your stuff. That way if you want a blue ribbon you type it in and bam there's all your blue ribbons. Unless your computer is mean like mine was LOL.

Kimberly's Mommy 06-23-2008 12:06 AM

Oh that would be SO COOL. I would love to be able to type in "blue ribbon" and have all my blue ribbons come up. I may have to download the free trial version and see if I can make it work for me. Then I'll know if I want to spend the money on it.

Anso 06-23-2008 04:41 AM

It's brilliant! I'm only had it for about a month and a half so I'm still going through my stash and tagging it. I do a little each day. Also I took an on-line course to learn it which was great - not sure I would have gotten into it otherwise. I can really recommend it :)

wvasweetness 06-23-2008 09:05 AM

And once again, I will say...

ACDSee, STOP DEPRIVING US MAC GIRLS!!!

LeeAndra 06-23-2008 11:43 AM

It's so inexpensive that I just bought it from the site. Make sure to purchase the 5 or 6 buck download deal where you can re-dl from their site for 2 years if your pg messes up, freezes, you lose it, etc. I bought mine in April (?) and have already had to re-dl from the site once. :)

LMK if you need any help once you get it. I've been helping Ashley this week with hers, and she's already as in love with ACDSee as I am. :)

Actually, you can save a backup to a CD yourself and save that 5-6 bucks. :)

MelissaL88 06-23-2008 01:38 PM

Yes...that's what I did Sarah!

Here's an example of a part of my "frames" tag:http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...ee_preview.jpg

The beauty of this is you can set it up to meet the way you scrap. For example, I don't necessarily look for Papers by Solid, Patterned, etc. I'm usually looking for a color. So, I just ditched my paper tag and just use my color tags for papers.

Anyway, I will also offer my help to anyone who wants to use or needs help figuring out their categories for ACDSee.

ColleenSwerb 06-23-2008 01:46 PM

I color tag everything, and have my papers sorted by pattern. I heart ACDSee. That's my mission for tonight, is to get a bunch more stuff tagged. I was going to do it this weekend but spent hardly any time on the computer.

Sarah8914 06-23-2008 02:24 PM

You guys have inspired me to get tagging again! It's been months and my stash has grown a lot in that time!!

One thing I love is tagging the previews. Especially in times like this when I haven't tagged everything else... if I have the previews tag, I can see my whole stash at once.

Also, even though I haven't tagged my scrap supplies lately, I've been tagging my pictures. I went through my daughters first 2 years and tagged which pictures I want to scrap. Then when I'm done, I take away the tag. It makes it so much easier for me since I don't want to scrap all the pictures I took (and I don't even like most of them now!)

ColleenSwerb 06-23-2008 02:30 PM

Sarah, don't forget that it's OK to delete pictures you'll never do anything with :)

And yes, I do sometimes have a hard time following my own advice :p

Sarah8914 06-23-2008 02:42 PM

Good point Col. I do that better with more recent pictures, but I have trouble with the older ones. And I actually have most of them paper scrapped anyway... so they really are somewhere. You know, I was a first time mom and had a picture of my daughter in every outfit she had even though she did nothing! It's hard for me to delete those...

ColleenSwerb 06-23-2008 02:45 PM

Oh I totally hear ya. I'm sure I'll be the same way, lol. :)

LOL - I do the SAME thing!

dover6473 06-23-2008 09:55 PM

i am also interested in getting this software...how does it work if all my digi stuff is on external hard drive?

Amber1279 06-23-2008 10:11 PM

ok - I just bought it .... 40% is a great deal

ajf9597 06-23-2008 10:30 PM

Just took the plunge and bought it, but I'm guessing with 216GB in my Digi Scrap folder, it's going to take a LONG while. I think it's time to download some of these to disk and delete them off my computer :)

ajf9597 06-23-2008 11:00 PM

Can anyone tell me where the best place to begin tagging things?

Easy, you have ACDSee on your computer but store the database on your EHD with your digi stuff! That's what I do. :) Actually, you don't even have to have the database there unless you use multiple computers with your EHD. If you don't, then you can probably just keep it on your computer.

try with the newest stuff first. just like how they say with scrapping start with the present and work backwards.

and I think that if you just save your license code you can always d/l the program if you need to.

and, dang, $30 is a great price! i think it is so worth it.

ajf9597 06-23-2008 11:40 PM

So from what I can tell you tag (rename the file) and then drag and drop into the category you want it in?

not sure what you mean. Tagging and renaming are 2 diff things. Assigning a category to a file is tagging it.

jaylensmom 06-24-2008 02:18 AM

ok i think i'm going to take the plunge too...

my question...do you really go back & tag older stuff or do you just go forward from when you purchased it?

dover6473 06-24-2008 09:25 AM

well i decided this morning that i have to have this software. lol so me being the bargin shopper, 40 percent wasnt good enough for me and i found this....It Works too!!!!

ACDSee 10 Photo Manager seemed to be popular with my friends. (Photo gallery viewer / picture manager / simple photo editor.) I started a 30 day trial, which is coming to an end. I went to their website to see how much it would cost me, and I found that they're running a 40% off special. (Normally $50, now $30.)

Of course, being a Slickdealer, that wasn't enough for me. So I went searching for an additional coupon code at checkout. Yup. 20% off of $30 with coupon code "10PM20". Remove the download service from the card, and the final price is $24 to register. Basically, half off the normal price.

Darcy Baldwin 06-24-2008 09:41 AM

I tag things as soon as I unzip them. I've lost the database once, so I haven't gone back and tagged older stuff, but my rule is tag as I buy/receive. It'll be awhile before I get to the older things, but I know if I tag new stuff now, it'll help out in the long run. I'll get to the older stuff as I get to it. I try to spend 30 in a week tagging at some point.

If you want to have the stuff you already own in your database, then you need to go back and tag it all. The best way to start is tag as you buy. Then when you really find a tagging system that works for you, you can start to take 10 or 15 minutes every day and tag some of the older stuff in your stash. If you try and tag everything right off the bat, you're likely to feel overwhelmed and give it up all together (**cough cough ME cough cough**).

Tagging is completely different from renaming files. There's no dragging and dropping to be done. It's all checking off boxes.

There are 2 ways to go about building your database. There's an option at the top of the program, I think in the database section, where you can import files. You can do that and select various folders, and it'll import them. Then you can "search" those files for anything that has "button", for example. All the buttons that have button in their file name will pop up for you.

The other way (which is how I'm doing it because I kept having it shut down on me doing it the other way), is to just go throguh your stash bit by bit. You open a folder (let's use Traci's new Wish on a Rainbow, cuz I'm using it as we speak). You view that folder, and then open up the "properties" window (can't remember how to do it, I don't have ACDSee on this comp - probably under options or view or file or something). In the properties window, you can build up various categories for tagging. Mine looks somewhat like this:
Colors-> black, red green, blue, yellow, teal, kraft, multi etc etc etc
Designers-> (this is probably redundant, but whatever) :p
Elements:
flowers, bling, glitter, metal, misc, fasteners (broken down further), ribbons (broken down further), etc etc
Papers:
solids, striped, circles/dots, flowers, squares, distressed etc etc
Previews

So if I have a red distressed polka dot paper, it gets a check mark in the boxes for red, paper, distressed, circles/dots

A glittery gold ribbon wrap with a bow would get checks in the boxes for gold, glitter, ribbon (and the subcategories of wrap and bow inside of ribbons would also get checked).

Does that make more sense? If I have it here at work I'd do some screen shots for you.

Sarah8914 06-24-2008 09:57 AM

You're awesome Col! Good info!

And actually, you can drag the category to tag a bunch of items instead of checking boxes. But I usually just check boxes.

Oh cool, I didn't know that. If I have a bunch of buttons in a kit, I usually select them all and then check the buttons box. Then go back separately and check the colors. Of course, I haven't tagged in a while, lol.

I thought that you had to rename the product with your tag words and then drag them to the category you wanted them in.

Definitely not!! That would be too much work!! Just pick categories you like!

ColleenSwerb 06-24-2008 01:19 PM

Check my post above Angel. I tried to explain it to you.

Amber1279 06-24-2008 01:32 PM

I just went and followed the tutorials last night LOL. I got Bree's folder done :)

MelissaL88 06-24-2008 01:33 PM

Give me just a minute and I can make some screen shots :)

ColleenSwerb 06-24-2008 01:33 PM

Bree is done for me too! Lol! Select all, check templates and Bree Clarkson, apply to all files and folders. Done and done. :)

The one I'm really worried about tagging at this point is Traci. 5GB!!

MelissaL88 06-24-2008 01:42 PM

Ok...here is a shot of what Col is talking about:
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...e_preview2.jpg

The arrow is pointing to the check boxes under the properties. Or conversely, you could look at it from the tag view and do the same thing:
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...ee_preview.jpg

HTH~

ColleenSwerb 06-24-2008 01:44 PM

Yes! Thank you Melissa!! Visuals are always so much more helpful. :)

MelissaL88 06-24-2008 01:44 PM

And I agree with the others, the best way to start is by tagging the new stuff as you buy it. Then, as I use older stuff (after I've gone searching for it), I tag everything in the kit/element folder.

MelissaL88 06-24-2008 01:44 PM

Yep! And I LOVE Snaggit! :D

See...I knew sticking to one product would pay off! Woot...I'm easy for customers to tag! :D

dballance 06-24-2008 02:21 PM

Melissa!!!

Can you please post the rest of your element categories from Pebbles on. Yours is set up so nicely! I'm just getting started and still trying to figure out categories.

Paper is my biggest challenge though, anyone care to share how they tag paper?

ColleenSwerb 06-24-2008 02:26 PM

I'll edit this when I get home in a few hours to my exact tags. But my papers all get tagged paper, and then the specific sub category.

I have solid, striped, distressed, circles/dots (like polka dots, or big random circles), squares, flowers (including vines), stars, plaid, words/notepaper/graph paper (grids go in here, not in square, don't ask why cuz I don't know :p) and a misc for random themed shapes on paper. I know there's more......that's all I can think of though.

I also sort everything by color, for those times I'm looking for a specfic color ribbon/paper/whatever.

I'm not on ACDSee, but I have my paper set up like this...

http://palmerfamily.smugmug.com/phot...19_qDJCD-M.jpg

dballance 06-24-2008 02:29 PM

Thanks! I'm such a paper hoarder that I have 3 times as much paper as elements LOL

MelissaL88 06-24-2008 02:31 PM

No problems! I'm supposed to be reviewing Capital Expenditure Input Schedules right now...but that's just a little boring ;)

Here are the rest of the elements:
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3..._elementsb.jpg

I organize my papers by colors. I used to have tags for solids/stripes/patterened and also for textures like cardboard/denim/glitter but I found I don't search for papers that way...I usually just search by color.

I also think it's time to go through my elements categories again and make changes for things I don't use (like the Pebbles) and to maybe expand on some others (like frames). It's definately a fluid exercise.

Sarah8914 06-24-2008 02:31 PM

Melissa, yours looks so pretty, why doesn't mine look like that? Maybe I need to look at it again and see if it does. LOL :)

ColleenSwerb 06-24-2008 02:32 PM

I have frames broken into categories. I also have a fasteners category for things like brads, eyelets. A clips category for bull clips, paper clips, binder clips. Etc etc.

You definitely customize it as you go. :)

Sarah8914 06-24-2008 02:34 PM

What do you guys do for multi colored papers? I mean like, more than 2-3 colors? do you put it in all of the colors categories? Or have a multi-colored? I think I do both. But if I am looking for a blue paper, chances are that I don't want 5 other colors on it (unless it coordinates anyway...)

ColleenSwerb 06-24-2008 02:38 PM

I have a multi category for those with more than 2 colors.
If it's just 2, sometimes 3, I'll put it in all the categories.

Although for something like a pink button with black marker doodles, it'd just get pink, and not black.
