What was your craft before scrapping?

I used to be an avid cross stitcher. I dabbled in paper scrapping for awhile but I was never totally in love with it. I think it was a combination of hating my hand writing, the mess and my total inability to cut a straight line :D

I decided to start getting rid of my old stash of both on ebay. I figured whenever I got the desire to do either again what I had would be so out of date I'd end up wanting to buy new stash anyway. Its rather bittersweet, though I'm not sure why??

So that made me wonder, what did you do before? Do you still do it, miss it, or totally over it?

scarletsierra 10-09-2008 12:26 PM

It was always paper crafts for me. I've never had any skill in anything in the sewing arena...non of any kind. I did paper scrapping, some modge podge stuff (my poor family got modge-podged everything that year for Christmas), card making, that kind of thing. I still dabble a little with cards, and occassionally some other crafts, but mostly I'm over it.

I've always thought about knitting though. Maybe I'll try my hand in that someday.

Amber1279 10-09-2008 12:34 PM

paper crafts for me as well :)

nikkiARNGwife 10-09-2008 01:00 PM

I used to be a HUGE big time cross stitcher! lol But when DS was born it became just about impossible b/c I'm one who likes to sit and stitch for hours and that's not easy with a baby or chasing a toddler kwim? One day though I'll get back to it :)

ditzyscrap 10-09-2008 01:02 PM

I was into cross-stitch too, lol...I have a big project 3/4 done and then I found scrapping...it's still sitting there 6 years later, lol...

alansrock 10-09-2008 01:04 PM

I still do my other crafts from time to time: embroidery & sewing crafts & cross stitch

nikkiARNGwife 10-09-2008 01:06 PM

This made me really miss stitching...here's a pic of the last project I did...Mirabilia's Cinderella...I haven't even gotten it framed yet and I finished it 4 years ago! Won't it be perfect in a little girl's room though? :)

junebug 10-09-2008 01:06 PM

i don't think i can remember a time before i scrapped, lol. But i did a lot of hands on crafts. Making name plaques for the kids' rooms. I was an avid drawer as a teenager. i had several full doodle books. But I don't ever sit and draw anymore. That's kinda sad, lol.

sugarink 10-09-2008 01:08 PM

I think I've tried everything before becoming a digital scrapbooker (crochet/knit, acryclic painting, floral design, jewelry making, card making). It was probably because I worked at my local craft store for so many years that exposed me to try and teach myself different things. I still have all my supplies stored in my closet, maybe hoping to find time to play around with it again one day

lizzyfizzy 10-09-2008 01:08 PM

a small span of paper scrapping other than that nothing.

ColleenSwerb 10-09-2008 01:12 PM

I tried cross stitching when I was little cuz my mom was into it. I tried paper scrapping WAY back when, but wasn't all that into it. It wasn't until I graduated college and had a job that I found I NEEDED something to do with my time. I started with paper scrapping. Then I learned to knit. Then I found digi. Then I got a sewing machine.

So right now, I do all sorts of crafts still, not just digi. I have a blanket I need to knit for a christmas present. Curtains to be sewn. Paper projects to be finished. Hybrid projects to be done. It's endless, in the best way imaginable :)

Mama-to-Elle 10-09-2008 01:32 PM

I TRIEED to paper scrap.. I did a few pages, and couldnt handle it... NOTHING was straight... it took FOREVER, the mess was unbearable...
UGH.. Digi is the way for me.. .:D LOL!

Leila 10-09-2008 01:33 PM

I didn't have one. I'm just not the crafty type at all.

lovely1m 10-09-2008 01:35 PM

I did a lot of cross-stitching. Might be doing it again now though as my cousin wants some cross-stitched name plagues. I also paper scrapped for 9 years before I found digi. I do a bit of sewing, too.

rach3975 10-09-2008 01:36 PM

Beautiful, Nikki! It will look great in your DD's room.

It was always fiber arts for me. I sewed, crocheted, did needlepoint, beaded, and dabbled in a few others. Once in a while I'll start a small sewing or crochet project these days, especially when I need a scrapping break. During DS2's first year I hardly scrapped (this was after I'd been a digiscrapper for 2 years), and I did a lot of sewing. But there just isn't time for everything, and the lure of the computer is stronger than the others. I'll go back to some of them one day, when I have more free time. (That time will come sooner or later, right?!)

amystoffel 10-09-2008 01:54 PM

I used to do wood crafts...like I made dolls, ornaments, all kinds of country lookin stuff...it was cute, but not my style anymore. Plus I have way too many glue gun scars.

jessica31876 10-09-2008 02:04 PM

a little of everything...crocheting, latch-hook, embroidery, cross-stich, painting, drawing, jewelry. I have done just about everything but knitting

Tracyfish 10-09-2008 02:17 PM

Paper scrapping and BIG TIME stamper! I am in the process of figuring out how I want to sell off my closet FULL of rubber stamps. I bet I haven't used them in over 3 years.

LenaGardner 10-09-2008 02:30 PM

I've done it all...crocheting, knitting, cross stitch, paper scrapping, painting. Directly before discovering digi I was really into painting, specifically painting the rooms of my apartment in unique and funky ways (stripes, bagging, tye dye) etc. But, I was single and my girlfriends and I had paint parties and had SO much fun.

I still knit, mostly only one thing though. Irish hiking scarfs! I don't know how to do hats or anything :)

I do photo cross stitch. I'm currently working on a 5x7 of this in cross stitch:

maryinaz 10-09-2008 02:30 PM

Let's see...I've sewed (sewn?) since I was 14, but rarely do it anymore. After I had my first 2 boys I got into Barbie collecting and started customizing Barbies. Weird, I know.

I did paper scrapping (and still do) for the past 9 years, and then got into making beaded jewelry. Then a little over a year ago I started making recycled art and recycled jewelry (although I don't really consider that a craft).

junebug 10-09-2008 02:31 PM

ooh i forgot about jewelry making! i still do that from time to time. i make bracelets for my girls all the time.

jessica31876 10-09-2008 02:38 PM

Ohhh and ceramics. My grandma owned a ceramic shop here in Orlando for a very long time so I did that for awhile when I was younger. There arent many ceramic places left so that is not something I do anymore. I quit crocheting because it causes to much pain in my hands and I am kinda compulsive when it comes to other stuff. I get about 75% of a project done and see something else and want to start on it. that is why digi shopping is great because I can finish a layout semi-quickly. almost instant gratification where as a cross stitch kit can take weeks-sometimes months to finish. I lost interest in that.

newfiemountiewife 10-09-2008 02:39 PM

Nothing really. I paper scrapped a handful of pages, but realized I sucked at it. I have no drawing or painting talent at all. I don't have a sewing machine anymore, but I could sew a bit, and I can knit. But really, I wasn't "into" anything.

BEAUTIFUL!! It would be perfect for a little girls room.

I have SO many projects not framed!

kscwgirl 10-09-2008 02:44 PM

I love cross stitching. I haven't done it in a really long time though.

scarletsierra 10-09-2008 02:52 PM

Ooh I forgot about stamps. I have loooads of them. Loved doing that!

Also made some beaded ornaments once, lol.

melmos75 10-09-2008 03:02 PM

As a teenager, I used to make little craft angels and sell them for a profit. Then I took on cross-stitching and did quite a bit of that until I had my first child almost 10 years ago. I put everything aside for my kids until recently when I picked up digi scrapping after trying to figure out what I was gonna do with all the pics I was taking of my 3 little munchkins.

Brooke W 10-09-2008 03:11 PM

I always loved Mirabella's kits/instruction booklets, but never tried one, because they looked so time consuming, lol. A long time ago in a galaxy far away, I cross stitched; a LOT. That time came and went. I've visited a lot of crafts but I haven't done anything crafty since I tried paper scrapping so long ago (and ditched, it was too expensive  ,lol).

ditzyscrap 10-09-2008 03:25 PM

That is gorgeous, Nikki. I started a Mirabella pattern and gave up on it. My sister finished it for me, though, lol.

Jennilyn 10-09-2008 03:48 PM

Before digi-scrapbooking I made sig tags and stationary for Incredimail (an e-mail program) so I was still on the computer all the time. Before that I cross stitched, but not a lot.

pewtertm 10-09-2008 05:16 PM

Needlepoint...although it takes me forever and a day to finish a project.

juliemarie 10-09-2008 05:25 PM

I was a quilter... hope to be again someday :)

breakingbrie 10-09-2008 05:29 PM

Wow, you girls are all so crafty!! LOL, I'm so not. I actually started knitting blankets for the girls about 2 years ago, and I've never gotten back to them. that's it other than a bit of paper scrapping- which I used to think I was really good at, all my family loved my pages... Then a month ago I pulled out all my paper stuff(sold it to buy digi :D ) and WOW. Those paper scrapped pages SUCKED! Lmao, I was sooooo not a good paper scrapper. I am so glad I got into digi!

Stacey42 10-10-2008 12:40 PM

I was and am a crocheter. I used to quilt, stopped when DS1 started crwaling & am just now starting again to make 2 twin quilts for their new bunk beds. I used to cross stitch as well. I still pull it out from time to time when the mood strikes me but crochet is just far more portable & less problematic with small kids around

Winter Ivy 10-10-2008 12:48 PM

I am an avid knitter, still am. I also love to cook, which isn't really a craft, per se, lol. I used to make all kinds of funky polymer clay beads, but I never did anything with them. I have stings and strings of them, and a whole giant tool box full of the clay. I always think I am gonna do something with them, but I just haven't yet. I have so many hobbies (+ a toddler and a household...) I just don't have time do everyhing I would like to do!

Nikki - That cinderella cross stitch is beautiful!

meems 10-10-2008 01:45 PM

i tried various things . . . macrame, polymer clay, weaving, knitting, card making. never got that far with any of them. digi is the only crafty thing where I actually finish something LOL.

Sue Setiadji 10-10-2008 07:40 PM

Huge list here!! Cross Stitch, sewing, quilting, beading (ran some beading nights at one stage) folk art, knitting (since I was 8), card making, doll making (along with teddy bears), embroidery...fortunately I have plenty of finished products along with a few unfinished ones. With Mum a crafter it was hard not to be inspired! Digi scrapping has been the most all consuming tho!
