Does anyone use the Kindle2?

I was checking out the Kindle on amazon and I am intrigued. I was wondering if anyone has used one or knows someone who has one.

My dad should have it in his grubby paws anyday now. I'll let you know what he thinks when he's played with it awhile. I am dying to know too!

I thought they looked pretty neat. Then I saw the price LOL. I'll just admire from afar.

A friend of mine just got one and LOVES it.

A friend of mine got a Kindle just before he was deployed to Afghanistan. He loves it! Says it is really easy to read from, very lightweight but feels solid, holds a ton of books. He just came home a few weeks ago and immedately bought the Kindle 2

The price is a bit intimidating, isn't it? I am just curious... I am not sure that I would spend that much $$ on it. Although I do have some extra $$ stashed aside to buy myself something nice. I was thinking of a blueray DVD player, or a Bose Theater Speaker system for our living room. But the thing is I would rather spend my money on ME instead of something that the family uses. I know it sounds selfish, but I very rarely buy myself something nice (that is more than $100 or so). So I may very well spend my money on the Kindle2. I might be able to get it and the DVD player with the money I have -- but the Bose System would definitely be out. I have had this money put aside for a while now and DH says if I don't spend it soon he is gonna (which means more fishing gear). LOL

This is on my list for Mother's Day/Anniversary/Birthday. My only hesitation is that there is an App for iPhone/iTouch for the Kindle so that you can download books there and it's cheaper to get one of those. However, there isn't much room to read on an iTouch.

There's an interesting review on it here:

The comments at the bottom are interesting too.

DH would love this, I'm reading the reviews now.

ETA I don't think you can get it in Canada. Sucky.

It's such a cool gizmo and it seems really great if you travel a lot. Since I don't at the moment, I'm not sure it's worth it for me at $400 and $10/book. I'll stick with the (free) library books.

Stacey42 03-16-2009 07:44 AM

Some libraries have downloadable books now that you can get for the Kindle. I guess they expire at a certain point after download or something.

Not my library though. My library has only recenly decided to test out downloading audiobooks. :(

I'm wishing for one of these, but I know DH won't go for it right away. I'm also wanting an iPhone, but these are things that I'm just putting on my wish list and will wait for. For now, I'm sticking with free library books too. I'm sure over time, there will be a lot more options for free library loans for the Kindle that will expire after a certain amount of time. That's when I'll be really ready to spend the $$ for a Kindle.

BTW, I recently saw a Charlie Rose interview with the head guy from Amazon and they talked about the Kindle a lot. He said part of the reason it's expensive is because there isn't any kind of service plan that goes a long with it - like an iPhone might have - and that as the technology progresses and gets cheaper, the price of the Kindle will go down as well.

It is pretty amazing that you can download anywhere/anytime. That's worth the price to some people, I guess, though since I stick close to home, it wouldn't be much of a benefit to me. I can also download library books to my palm pilot and I do use that sometimes, though the Kindle looks a lot nicer to read from!
