S/O What are you reading to your kids?
 

I'm always on the lookout for great fun books to read aloud to the boys that aren't part of school stuff. Good fun bedtime stories or just all around fun books.

Right now, we're on a John Lithgow kick and are loving them. And we're reading Phantom Tollbooth aloud (though Aiden's not enjoying it much - it's too cerebral for him after lunch LOL). But Connor and I are digging the cerebralness of it.

My almost-4-yo is sitting right next to me, right now "reading" a few books. (He just recites them from memory, lol.) He loves Sandra Boynton books, the Berenstain Bears, and Disney books that are based on the movies.

We're finishing up Where The Red Fern Grows and starting Stuart Little next :)

I can't remember how old your boys are, but Cameron LOVES the Flat Stanley books by Jeff Brown.

We've also read Tale of Despereaux and The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by the amazing amazing Kate DiCamillo. If you want some shorter stories by her, I would totally reccomend her series of Mercy Watson stories. Totally hilarious and AMAZING illustrations.

We love Hank the Cowdog by John Erickson (a real cowboy), all of the Shredderman books by Wendelin van Draanen, and the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books by Jeff Kinney (for older elementary-school-aged kids perhaps).

*sob* that book makes me bawl everytime I read it. I doubt I could get through it with my kids w/o sobbing. and I am NOT a cryer. lol

We love Stuart Little too. Thats on our "list" of books-toead. :)

My mom bought Tyler 'Big Words for Little People' by Jamie Lee Curtis, and he really enjoys that. Jeff will read him parts of the book (or reread parts) before bedtime.

The other day, he told us he had to PERSEVERE when it came to tying his shoes. *lol* I think the book is working!

DD's gotten teary eyed at a few parts... I'm not looking forward to her reaction to the ending. THAT will make me cry.

Emma's only 3 but some big hits in our house are ANY Sandra Boynton book, Bad Dog Marley, Fancy Nancy, and she loves the "Where's Waldo-esque" books.

yeah, Cameron would totally be broken-hearted about it. I don't think I could put him through that. lol Maybe in a few more years.

It's why I'm not reading it to my boys :( I have two sensitive little animal lovers, and this would throw them over the edge...and I know I can't do it aloud.

We love Hank, too, but they're reader books for Connor and then we listen to the audio books together on trips to Dad's :)

we read james & the giant peach, then stuart little, then charolette's web.. and now we're reading the mouse & the motorcycle

I didn't know you had a Connor too, Darcy! How funny!

Cameron (7) has been listening to a lot of Hank books on his iPod. Oh and Magic Tree House, of course. THOSE are classics. :)

Alex loved the Astrosaurs series by Steve Cole for bedtime reading - think Star Trek with dinosaurs! After that we moved onto the Dinosaur Cove series (by Rex Stone), and now we're into the secret agent life of Jack Stalwart (by Elizabeth Singer Hunt) - which, I have been told, is very cool and exciting (;)). I'd recommend any of these series for young, under 10-ish boys - they are also fun to read from the parents point of view too (which helps!).


My son also loves listening to Roald Dahl - any of his stories, but particularly 'The Fantastic Mr Fox'. He really loves audiobooks and it doesn't matter if we have already ready the books. I usually download from Audible for both Alex and I. ...I highly recommend audiobooks on ipods for long journeys!

I'm so glad you've started this thread - it'll be great to get recommendations for bedtime!

I don't read out load that much to my boys anymore. I don't know why. They both have their own interests so it's hard to find one book they both agree on. Fortunately, they both love to read, so there is a never ending supply of books to be read in our house.

When they were younger, I used to read the Junie B Jones books aloud. I could do most of the voices and it had the boys in stitches. The Magic Tree House books were also good read aloud books.

I think the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books would be good read aloud books. My boys are constantly reading parts out loud to me. And they're always laughing when they read those books.

For those of you whose kids love audiobooks, be sure to check to see whether you can download them from your library. Our library has an amazing collection of FREE audiobooks for download over the Internet. You download them and then have 2 weeks to listen to them. It's such an awesome deal. I love kids' books and I've recently listened to the whole Golden Compass series, Artemis Fowl, The Dark is Rising series (another great one for boys about King Arthur, sort of), the Percy Jackson (Lightning Thief) series -- about a kid who finds out he's a son of Posiedon, and I'm currently listening to the first in the Septimus Heap series. Plus a whole bunch of regular books.

My son is 4. Our favorites by far have been the Magic Treehouse Series. Since we finished those, we've read through the Dinosaur Cove books by Rex Stone, some Nate the Great and Ready Freddy. Jamin adores the Ready Freddy books because the main character loves sharks. I don't like the way the big sister and some of the kids treat each other in the Ready Freddy books, so we do a lot of 'debriefing' as we read.

We have the first 5 books in the "Ready, Freddy" series here, Natalie has the Tinkerbelle book (though I have no idea where it went to)...I just received a handful of books from Scholastic (Robert Muncsh mostly) and sent in my order for the first book in the Puppy Place series and the first 6 books in the Dinosaur Cove series.

I haven't updated in a LONG time but I have a list for my kids on GoodReads, separate from mine...I love looking through kids books and then ordering them from the library (or through Scholastic) for the kids! :) If you're interested, their profile is here: http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/742243

What i'm reading right now to my 2 older kids ages 7 and 5 is
Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak a favorite of mine i wanted to share with them and of course Dr seuss books which they love to read to me which i love !

we are for the life of us trying to get back into our reading at nite routine.

when we do we will be starting the miraculous journey of edward tulane.

after that...no clue. i need to snag ideas from this thread.

DS1 and I are finishing up The Great Shark Escape (Magic School Bus) and will move on to Vacation Under the Volcano (Magic Tree House)

DS2 brings a new book home every day from his preschool class. Last night it was Harvey Potter's Balloon Farm (or something like that)

Can I just say, as a teacher, this thread totally makes me smile! :) Y'all rock! Plus I got some good ideas that I had kind of forgotten from this thread.

My recent fave for my 3 year old and my preschool class is Llama Llama Red Pajama and all the Mo Willems books.
