Cake....mmmm

Okay - two weeks ago I made this flip flop cake for my DD's 7th birthday.
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...efish/cake.jpg

One side is chocolate and one side is vanilla. I made two large sheet cakes and then cut out each flip flop. I had a copious amount of cake left over from cutting out the final cake so I froze it. It's in little bite sized to brick sized pieces.

What can I do with all these frozen left over cake pieces? They are plain, no icing. I'm trying to come up with a dessert I could take to work or serve as dessert after the game on Saturday. Ideas????

that's so cute! mmmm - cake pops/cake balls are a great idea! i made some the other week and they were fun! maybe there's some sort of trifle you could do if you don't like that idea? maybe layers of cake/fruit/pudding or whipped cream .... most trifles call for pound or angel food cake, i think - so no idea if that would work or not - LOL!

Oh that is so adorable!

I agree that cake pops would be a great idea and they are really good!

They are delicious, and you could make them into oval-type shapes, cover in milk chocolate, and "paint" white stripes on them to look like footballs!!

That cake(s) is adorable!!!! My son is expecting a Guitar Hero cake for his bday next week and I can't find black fondant ANYWHERE.

Thanks for the ideas! I'll check out cake pops and cake balls.

For the Black Fondant - what about just adding black coloring to a darker colored fondant - like purple?

Valgal 09-17-2009 11:00 AM

hmm... i wonder if that would at least get me CLOSE to black. everything i've read says that only the manufacturers can get it true black because of the chemicals they have access to. i'm going to call two cake places i know of first, and if they don't have any i'll use your idea. thanks!

My first thought was cake balls or cake pops... they are pretty messy to make though!

My second thought was a Trifle or soemthing like that... pudding, cake, whipped cream in layers! Yum!!

Valerie - I'm a member on CakeCentral.com and I asked how to get black fondant. I was told that if you want to make it, to make chocolate fondant or a dark dark brown. Then add your black food coloring. Then wrap it in plastic wrap and let it sit for a few hours. The colors darken as they sit. You'd get a pretty close black if you do it that way.

Either that or you can buy it. I was told the Wilton tastes disgusting though. Homemade is yummy! I made a Marshmallow Fondant and it was easy and worked up good!

Thanks. I called a local cake supply place and she said the things I've read that say it can't be done at home are a crock, lol! She has the stuff for me to do it and says she makes her own all the time. So... yay!
