do you have a lot of bees around your house?

my mom says they are bad around hers this year. they are all over! mainly around our trash can outside. i put a bag in there and a bunch of them some swarming out. i was cleaning out the car yesterday and they kept buzzing around my head. Aidan must have cornered one cause he got stung on his hand; now he is extremely afraid of them if they come near him he screams. :( they find their way into the house; some days i'll kill several in my kitchen. can't find a nest anywhere. my kids are afraid to play outside. just wondered if its just around here or if they are bad everywhere. tried to google it but can't seem to find much on if there is a reason.

Thank goodness we don't...I'm allergic and have to carry an EpiPen around all the time anyway. Lucky us, we get spiders.

It's possible that the bees could actually have made their home inside the walls of the house. If they are really bad (esp on a daily basis), I'd consider calling a beekeeper or some other professional for advice. The Beekeepers' Association might be able to point you in the right direction. Here's their link:

Are they actual bees or are they hornets/wasps/yellow jackets. I think it is the time of year they start making new homes and getting ready for the winter. We've had a couple come in the house lately (wasps) due to the kiddos leaving the door open. Maybe the bees made a nest in the lid of the garbage can or something at your mom's.

We've got those little honey bees and Asian Lady Beetles right now. DRIVING ME BONKERS! My kids are petrified of bugs (well the big one is and she scares the little one) so it's a constant battle.

they are at my house too; i forgot to put the word 'too' at the end of that first sentence, lol. anyway, i think they are just honeybees and i have never ever seen them this bad. most of them are in our trashcan, inside it aroundn the trash. when i move the can or put another bag in it they all swarm out. so afraid i'll get stung. i've never been stung by a bee believe it or not. but considering how many there are i just may here soon. the trash men are going to have so much fun, lol. maybe i can get a spray or a bomb thing and put it in the trash can, lol.

we have bunch of those little orange lady bugs too. those i can handle. Emma thinks they are cute lol.

You're not too far from me Corey so I was guessing they were the same things ;)

here's a picture of one i took on the trash can. they are atleast a half inch long.

i've just never seen so many bees before, lol. the occasional one in the yard or bumble bees even wasps but never so many honey bees! there has to be a nest either in trash can or near it.

Nope - too cold;) All the bugs have gone for the year!

That's not a bee, it's a yellow jacket, Corey. Don't spray them in the daylight, they might swarm and come at ya. When you find the nest spray it at night. In daylight they'll be awake enough to come at ya,lol. Get the hornet/wasp spray and follow instructions :)
They don't die if they sting, which is another way you know they aren't bees.

sprauncey1 10-21-2009 03:42 PM

yep those are nasty yellow jackets! Kill kill kill! LOL I'd save the bees but I kill the yellow jackets!

rachaelsscraps 10-21-2009 04:00 PM

We used to in the springtime but not so much anymore. I've found so many on our porch (which is closed-in with windows) and I felt like I was always killing them!
I'm so afraid of bees! lol! I've never been stung by one and don't know how the whole allergy thing works... my dad is allergic so I don't know if I would be or not. sucks.
I. Hate. Bees :p Well, the mean old yellow jackets, anyway!

Those are what we call wasps - I have heard the term european wasp, too. I was already wondering when you said they were around the trash can, bees wouldn't do that. If your son was stung by a bee, you probably would have found the - what is it called in english? - the thorn/sting of the bee. When bees sting they loose them and die, wasps don't.

When it gets colder, most wasps will die and before that there is a time where they get more aggressive. Put up wasp traps with soda, lemonade - they get attracted by the sweet smell and will drown in it. I know it is hard, but if you have one flying around you, keep calm, don't hit, stay very still, eventually they will fly away.

i thought maybe there were something other than bees! by my DH said "no, they are honey bees". and them hanging around the trash can i thought was strange. and when Aidan was stung it just few off and i didnt see any stinger in his hand. i KNEW it!! i'll never listen to my husband again, lol. i'll have to get some spray stuff now. thanks you very much for your insight. i'm glad i posted that picture!

OMG! So do we! They have been insane and I am killing like 4-5 a day IN my house! I cannot figure out where they are coming from, but I accidently stepped on one the other day right before bed. I was up all freakin night long cause my toe hurt so bad.

wvasweetness 10-21-2009 10:20 PM

OMG, YESSSS! I mean, I know I'm a little more intune with the bee count around our house since Wes got stung and we found out he's allergic - but SERIOUSLY, they are awful out! I'm a nervous wreck every time Wes plays outside. And of course if he sees anything that remotely looks like a bee, he screams like a girl and runs away.

I'm just hoping we can make it to cold weather without any stings... I do NOT want to be using the Epipen this year (or ever!)
