This morning,

a little after 3 a.m., I heard a big bang outside. We had extremely strong winds and some rain. (We live on the water, so when we get bad weather in our area, we often have really strong winds coming off the water.) We also have really huge (beautiful) oak trees which are the character of our neighborhood. My fear during storms and hurricanes has always been that a big limb would fall on our house and hurt a member of our family.

Well this morning after hearing the loud noise, I looked out our side window to see if anything had fallen. Didn't see anything. Wes came into my bed wondering what the noise was too. Just told him it must have been something outside in the wind.

Fast-forward to this morning when hubby and Wes are walking outside to go to school. A massive limb -- well, doesn't even sound right to call it a limb, 'cause it's big enough to be a huge tree trunk -- is down in our driveway and completely blocking our street in front of our house. This was only about 10 feet in front of Wes' window. Hubby and I were so thankful that he had some old limbs from that tree cut down last year.

The power company had to cut off our power (surprisingly even though the limb was on top of the power line, it did not cut off our power when it fell) so the city could cut the limb up and get it out of the road. We were w/out power all morning and still have a huge trunk in our driveway. But I'm feeling so blessed that no one (or property) was hurt.

Here are some pics:

jessica31876 02-05-2010 06:48 PM

wow!! That is a HUGE limb!! We just had the tree that was hit by lightning a few years ago cut down this summer. Apparently we just discovered another tree was hit by lightning and it has half of the tree dead. So glad you are all ok!! The trees falling during a hurricane or bad storm scare me too and we have a warning up here until 6:00. Probably the same storm system that hit your area this morning!

breakingbrie 02-05-2010 07:24 PM

nikkiARNGwife 02-05-2010 09:10 PM

Yikes! I'm so glad it didn't hit anything. We had one fall on our old house once...it wasn't nearly as big but it fell straight up/down and literally pierced a hole so that half of it was sticking through the ceiling...it scared me to death!

lovely1m 02-05-2010 10:40 PM

Wow, that is huge! Thank goodness it landed where it did.
