Spin off of evening meal thread

My husband and I can't agree on what the evening meal is called, what do yall call it?

Megan Turnidge 01-11-2011 04:07 PM

No one I know IRL says supper. Everyone around here says dinner.

aggiefamily 01-11-2011 04:09 PM

Dinner is the meal at noon. Sometimes it is called lunch.

Supper is the meal in the evening.

jessica31876 01-11-2011 04:10 PM

I call it both but voted dinner because we probably say it more I guess

deepounds 01-11-2011 04:11 PM

We usually say "supper" but sometimes "dinner" . . . having grown up in the South a lot more years ago than I'd like to think, though, "dinner" to me implies a weekend afternoon meal with guests involved! :D

This is my husbands theory, and he is from East Texas, so maybe we are on to something!

ColleenSwerb 01-11-2011 04:16 PM

Dinner up here :)

Maybe it IS Texas . . . I thought it was the South in general (that and my age)!

MissKim 01-11-2011 04:25 PM

When I was in high school foods class, we learned that "dinner" is your biggest meal of the day. So my dh grew up calling the noon meal dinner -- he grew up on a farm and they ate their big meal then. I have always eaten my biggest meal of the day in the evening, so that is when my family has dinner.

If it's a smaller, lighter meal, the noon meal is called lunch. The evening meal is called supper when it's light. Dinner can be either at noon or in the evening, depending on which is bigger.

This... only my dad says it, and he is referring to lunch. We always say, "what's for supper?"

Leah 01-11-2011 04:45 PM

It's a toss! I will ask "What do you want for supper?" and then say "sit down and eat your dinner!"

Go figure. LOL

nikkiARNGwife 01-11-2011 04:48 PM

Evening meal is always supper..never dinner.

mid-day meal is "lunch" if it's like a sandwich..."dinner" if it's a big cooked meal (like a family gathering or something)

Lizzy257 01-11-2011 04:51 PM

Definitely dinner. Round these parts, supper is like an extra meal that you might have even later in the evening, after dinner (evening meal) :D

It is not a Texas thing, we say same here Dinner @ Noon and Supper @ Night

We had this big debate on Twitter one day haha and came to the conclusion it is mainly used by farming communities and then spread other places. My hometown in South Dakota said it this way and everyone around us here in MN do too.

I often say lunch and dinner but get corrected by my husband. I, however, remind him if we have plans for a dinner date it isn't taking place at noon.

eranslow 01-11-2011 05:06 PM

I really have no clue! lol All I know is I say the wrong thing (supper or dinner) around my mom and she always corrects me! lol

^ This. I don't know where Amanda gets the idea that Texans call lunch dinner. :p

For me the nighttime meal is supper and the midday meal is lunch, unless it's a big dinner - LOL

This. And it doesn't matter what time the "nice" meal is, it's dinner, lol

For me it is dinner because I use to be the one that would go ring the dinner bell to let the cowboys know that it was time to come in for their midday meal. Yes, we have a dinner bell.

True...I guess I'm just used to it not being used on anything but Sunday that way 'round here.

nesser1981 01-11-2011 06:46 PM

It was supper when i was growing up, a southern thing I guess, dinner was more like lunch. But I say dinner now, and I think that's just something I've picked up over the years since I've been out of the south.

wow, I want a dinner bell to round up some cowboys! :D

West coast, it's dinner for the evening meal. Lunch for the noontime meal. The only person I know that says supper is my dad (who is from Illinois).

Stacey42 01-11-2011 08:07 PM

Lunch is at noon. Dinner is in the evening.

Supper is what you and your DH go out for, if you are dining after 7pm. Before 7pm you are eating dinner.

Though when I was growing up (north of where I live now) we had supper in the evening, lunch at noon.

But we also called soda 'pop'

maryinaz 01-11-2011 08:33 PM

Dinner here in the Southwest. I grew up in the Midwest and dinner and supper were interchangeable, but supper was used more on farms. But lunch was alway lunch! :)

I'm not sure if my boys would know what I was talking about if I said "it's time for supper!" LOL ;)

Oh, and we call soda "pop" too.

mummytothree 01-11-2011 08:34 PM

I grew up with it being called (and calling it) supper. But somewhere along the way it's now become dinner to me.

And on an side note I grew up calling "it" a sweeper and I had to sweep the livingroom, family room, bedroom ect.. but now say vacuum and we need to vacuum the livingroom, family room, bedroom ect. :D

kristijoy 01-11-2011 09:13 PM

Definately dinner. We've never used the term supper. I grew up in Washington State (USA)

mrshobbes 01-12-2011 02:11 AM

I was thinking in my head supper was a British thing? We call it dinner here.

And my "dinner bell" is buzzing the hubs to come down through Yahoo Messenger :P

farrijc 01-12-2011 05:01 PM

Well, I have lived in Texas my whole life... I normally use the terms lunch and then dinner. I consider supper to ONLY mean the evening meal, but I would use the term dinner for either meal (though I'm normally referring to the evening meal).
