Today is National Pecan Day

So - how do you pronounce it?

and just so everyone knows, I was not compensated for this poll in any way by the National Pecan Board or whomever got this day named as Pecan day, nor is the poll biased in any fashion, whatsoever - it's the truth! :p

MamaBee 03-25-2011 08:29 AM

ha, ha - correct way vs incorrect way... love how you worded the answers!

I say it the "correct way"... annoys me when watching a cooking show and they say pee-can... then, you just lost me... I'm now saying "peecan pie" in a nasal voice... ;) my son thinks it's funny...

Valgal 03-25-2011 08:43 AM

I say it the right way and everyone always makes fun of me!

scrap2day 03-25-2011 08:49 AM

hahaha Now I want to bake something with pecans.

Keely~B 03-25-2011 09:05 AM

We call them squirrel bait behind closed doors, it's the correct way in public ;)

Darcy Baldwin 03-25-2011 09:18 AM

LOLOL Keely

heathergw 03-25-2011 09:23 AM

neither, lol

I say pee-cahn

Darcy Baldwin 03-25-2011 09:29 AM

Well, that's wrong, too, Heather, but not as wrong as pee can :p

nikkiARNGwife 03-25-2011 09:33 AM

I always thought pee-can was a northern thing...my aunt is from Wisconsin and she always says "pee-can"

We say "peh-cahn"...but you have to really drag out the cahn lol

hollyxann 03-25-2011 10:45 AM

I say it the incorrect way. Always have.

I also use the word soda...not pop.

They're both wrong. It's coke...all of it, CocaCola, Pepsi, Mt. Dew, Sprite, Sunkist, it's all coke. :p

^^this lol...everything is coke...we ask "what kind of coke do you want?" :)

Soda is what you use in baking and to make your fridge smell better :)

hollyxann 03-25-2011 11:25 AM

I've heard of a lot of people using coke as the general soda term but I've never heard of soda put that way. lol

Not sure if it's just an Ohio thing or something. And I'm notorious for saying y'all and yins (A PA thing)

This! DH calls it 'pop' and that just bugs me. LOL.

And back to the topic...I pronounce it correctly...and now I want to pick up some pecans at the farmer's market.

Tracie Stroud 03-25-2011 01:54 PM

Definitely the correct (in other words, the SOUTHERN way). And yes, everything is a coke. :P

ditto to both parts.

And I don't get why people want to say pee-can or pee-cahn.... that just sounds so gross. lol

this too.

jacinda 03-25-2011 03:16 PM

We pronounce it pee-kin, cause we're different like that. I didn't even know there was another way to say it.

misfitinmn 03-25-2011 03:30 PM

I'm another of the hybrid variety who pronounces it pee-cahn.

But I hate them, so I don't spend a lot of time talking about them. ;)

SmallMoments 03-25-2011 03:39 PM

The correct way. :)

Darcy Baldwin 03-25-2011 04:24 PM

How could you people hate pecans?! I just don't get it.:p

oh, this one. I knew those didn't look right.

Nettio 03-25-2011 06:59 PM

I'm not sure if I'm in the pee-cahn or peh-cahn category. To me they aren't really that different so I think it might depend on my mood, haha.

Soda is the common term in CA. My grandma is originally from Nebraska so I've heard her call it pop even though she's lived in CA since she was a young girl. But everyone else calls it soda.

I've never heard anyone call all soda coke. That's just weird. Coke is a brand-name. Sorry but Sprite and Root Beer are not Coke. :D

No, you're thinking of CocaCola! That's a name brand! lol :D

LOL how long have you lived in Texas and not heard that? Although I never considered Sprite/7-Up to be coke...just the dark colas.

LOL we've been here since August. But we're in San Antonio, it's it's own special breed of Texan. :D I asked Adam and he said he hadn't heard any locals say it either so I don't know, maybe we just didn't notice? We almost never order soda anywhere though so that could be part of it too. Only water and alcohol, haha.

Traci Reed 03-25-2011 10:02 PM

Born and bred in California and it's Puh-cahn and soda. Coke= cocacola not every soda on the planet and baking soda is what you use to cook with..
