Canucks...it's election day!

Whatever your party, don't forget to vote today! We might see a brand new Canada after this election! :)

Jennilyn 05-02-2011 08:17 AM

I'm heading out now! :)

tuneskids 05-02-2011 09:36 AM

I'll be going before I have to pick the kids up from school (since I have to work this morning and then have a lunch date).

Traci Reed 05-02-2011 10:17 AM

Good luck girls!

HeatherB 05-02-2011 12:04 PM

By the time most of us get to vote in AB, the election results are usually basically decided already, based on solid voting blocks in Ontario and Quebec, but perhaps not this year. Should be interesting!

The kids at school had to do a student vote. My 8 year old told me he was voting for (the Conservative Party candidate). I asked him why. He said that because he's the Stephen Harpers man, and Steven Harper hasn't really done much wrong the last few years. *snort* How interesting that in Canada we seem to vote for who will do the least damage. :p

funny, my 8 year old said pretty much the same thing about their student vote.
Although in our area, the Conservative Party candidate is also our small town's Mayor, so the kids actually "know" him, compared to the four other candidates in our area (NDP, Liberal, Green & Independent).

newfiemountiewife 05-02-2011 12:57 PM

My kid voted for the green party in their mock election. When I asked him why, he said, "I didn't do enough research" LOL. The Liberal is the uncumbant here, and he'll probably get in again. I think NL tends to be Liberal leaning, but some people have predicted two NDP seats for us this go round.

LoriJ 05-02-2011 02:09 PM

I will be heading out tonight after work. It will be interesting to see what happens in the end.

newfiemountiewife 05-02-2011 02:29 PM

I just voted! Hope everyone gets out there and uses their voice!

KristinCB 05-02-2011 02:50 PM

We're heading out soon..

I took this a little while ago:

http://federal.votecompass.ca

My results actually surprised me.. voting for a different party than what I match up with on the quiz.

newfiemountiewife 05-02-2011 03:00 PM

I just did this test K, and mine was different too.

terrab 05-02-2011 03:21 PM

Just got back from voting :) I am also voting for a party that is different than the one in the vote compass but that is because my beliefs are not close to any of them and I am voting for the candidate who will do the least damage, haha!

newfiemountiewife 05-02-2011 04:41 PM

I was surprised when I went to vote. We had two candidates I had never even heard of LOL

Actually, this is a wonderfully rational thinking for an 8-year old. I think this is the right way to go about it - too much expectation will lead to disappointment.

newfiemountiewife 05-03-2011 08:12 AM

Well, our leader got a majority government. With only 40% of the popular vote in the country. So while 60% didn't vote for them, they still get to run the country. Geez, I love our political system!

Leah 05-03-2011 09:47 AM

We voted here. My kids wanted to know what would happen if I win. haha

This is what drives me crazy too, it is the split vote that really makes everything so uneven. Sometimes it would be just better if we went with a 2 party system but that gets into trouble as well! Who knows what will happen now, but I guess we have the next 4 years to figure it out!

So - I'm not Canadian... but I find this fascinating, I admit I don't know how other countries run or issues that face them, but it was interesting to see so many topics of interests for your nation... and how many of them mirror US. ;)

nanienamou 05-03-2011 11:27 AM

Yep, we voted yesterday. Not to happy about Harper's majority, but very happy that Quebec voted massively for a federal party instead the Bloc. :) There really was an NPD wave in Quebec last week - call it Orange Crush. :p

newfiemountiewife 05-03-2011 11:50 AM

Yes, we were also pleased with the Orange Crush! Newfoundland voted against Harper, they only got 1 seat here, my riding was one of the hotly contested ridings, but ultimately the incumbant Liberal won. I was loving the NDP wave in Quebec, I think they are frustrated too with the lack of Federal support, and were hoping for change.

LoriJ 05-03-2011 05:56 PM

whew! I am glad you guys said that too! I am so pleased with the massive NDP gains, not happy with Harper either. It was quite the night for sure!

KristinCB 05-03-2011 05:58 PM

We went NDP here too..I think I have voted NDP since the first election I voted in (I THINK LOL). I knew that conservative would take it here but I still wanted my opinion to count.

Doesn't it make you stop and think and wonder what would happen if people would just get out there and VOTE.

newfiemountiewife 05-03-2011 07:02 PM

It really bugs me that only 60% of the people voted! I'm sure some of the 40% will be the first ones to complain when Harper cuts social funding LOL!

I knew either the Liberal or the Conservative would win here, Fabian Manning left his Senate seat to come run here for the Conservatives. He lost though. But I still voted NDP even though I knew what the results would be. I wanted my opinion to count too!

Jennilyn 05-03-2011 08:05 PM

I voted NDP too, but Truro is known to be a Conservative town, so the Tory candidate won about 55% of the vote :(

terrab 05-03-2011 08:20 PM

Isn't it interesting how we all voted NDP yet they didn't win :( Gives me hope for the future though :D

No idea if what i'm saying is a valid statement but I wonder if a large population of the 60% of canadians that didn't vote are women & mothers.. and I wonder if canada could get some sort of word out & education to get women out to vote if it would make a difference on who is leading the country...

tuneskids 05-04-2011 09:52 AM

I voted, but Des didn't.
Silly guy went and changed his driver's license to Alberta already, and they hadn't sent him his photo one yet. I found out after that I could have filled out some paperwork to "vouch" for him, stating he still resided here, although he didn't think that would be fair since he technically spends more time in Alberta than he does here now.

I wasn't surprised that Conservatives won in our area, as I stated before, the candidate is our local Mayor, and as that, he has brought about good changes to the area (new business that had wanted to come before, but nothing was ever settled with the old Mayor, as he saw some businesses as competition - he owned a convenience/general store)
