That's my husband's home town :( He is so upset. Thankfully all of his family is okay, but it is very devastating. Spoke with my bil this morning who said he has a friend in HazMat and emergency mgmt that told him that they have trailers full of bodies waiting for identification :( the death toll is definitely going to climb on this one :(

Valgal 05-23-2011 09:35 AM

Oh yikes. The last news report I read said only 1 dead. I guess that has changed.

Amy Carey 05-23-2011 09:40 AM

it was officially 89 when I left the house but since have talked to BIL so who knows now what it will be :(

AmberK 05-23-2011 09:41 AM

CNN is reporting 89 dead. :(

my heart is breaking. we have friends there and some have lost their homes. i grew up about an hour from joplin. it is so very sad and heart wrenching.

All my extended family is in Joplin. Thankfully all my family is okay. There was damage to one family's home but nothing too bad. They still have a home which is more than some can say in Joplin. We all feel very blessed in this mess. When I talked to my dad last night, he was very emotional. That is where he grew up and all his family is there. He couldn't step away from the TV. It was just overwhelming to him.

Praying for Joplin and all the other areas effected. I hope we hear from the Missouri gals soon! ((HUGS)) to all!

kscwgirl 05-23-2011 11:31 AM

Hope everyone is okay. The coverage is horrible, I can't even imagine. :(

Also, this is the insurance agent in me coming out but PLEASE make sure you have homeowners/renters insurance and LIFE INSURANCE. I cannot stress that enough. Get yourselves and your family covered!!!

nietis 05-23-2011 11:58 AM

How horrible :( *hugs* I hope everyone is safe.

I am a Missouri girl, but all is well here (outside of St. Louis)... So thankful! We had some storms last night and a few sirens, and thunder and lightning that interfered with bedtime... But I cannot complain!

It has been a ROUGH season -- probably the worst I can remember! We had tornadoes in STL right after the new year and then again a few weeks ago that did significant damage locally... Very, very sad. Several of my neighbors have had to replace their roofs, but I think we have escaped damage so far... Thank goodness! Thinking of all of those who have not been so lucky...

89 dead, over 400 serious injuries as of 6am.

My grandmother and extended family all live 70 miles away, in Springfield. This morning, she woke up to find a photograph in her yard. My cousin found some X-Rays in his yard. Many people in Springfield have found debris from the tornado showing up in their yard, which is just... wow.

I told her to save the photograph, and to encourage others to save everything that shows up in their yards. Who knows? It may be the last things these people have.

I'm just sick about this. I grew up just south of Joplin, and just last week we drove straight through the town when we were visiting my family in Arkansas. Last night we saw a picture of a truck stop where we'd stopped for a bathroom break. It wasn't totally destroyed, but it was damaged. The first thing Jeff said was, "What about the nice people we met in there?" (Like the cashier, the other girl stocking the drink cups, etc)

Anytime something like this happens, it's so sad, but this is just so close to home. It makes me sick to my stomach. :(

Quite a few of my friends from college & law school are from Joplin (I'm in NW AR). Thankfully my friends and their families are all okay. I'm worried about the storms that will be coming though the rest of today and tomorrow. I hope the area doesn't get hit again.

Small world! I grew up in NWA, and all of my family is still there. I was just visiting my mom in Springdale last week. :) I lived there all my life until I moved to Wichita last year.

To donate $10 to the Joplin Relief Fund through the Heart Of Missouri United Way, text Joplin to 864833. I donated my $10. :)

I am so weepy today - just can't stop. :( It doesn't help that I'm glued to all coverage.

My sister was just at Walmart trying to stock up on water since they can't drink tap water. Her daughter already knows one friend who was killed (just graduated from high school). We have so many friends who lost their homes...

Here's a photo story of the devastation.

Milmomma 05-23-2011 07:46 PM

I'm from MO, but north part. We have family down there which are all okay. All our family all over MO say its been a rough year with storms. :/ I sure hope things settle down soon and things can get started with the repairs of the heart and homes. Its all so sad to see. My prayers go out to them all.

suze 05-23-2011 08:23 PM

I'm up north, it is so devastating.
