Summer Staycation Poll

What are you favorite things to do during the summer/year for a staycation?

If your choice isn't listed please just post it in the thread!

Leah 05-23-2011 07:45 PM

We've signed the kids up for swimming lessons at an outdoor pool for the past couple of years. This year, we've got them registered for two weeks in a row and we are hoping to camp there. :)

MandaT 05-23-2011 07:48 PM

We do lots outdoors.
--Camping every other weekend, if not every weekend.
--Fishing.
--Sometimes we plan a big yardsale weekend where we get donuts for breakfast in town & hit as many as we can on Saturday morning.
--Day trips to the lake/lakes/river somewhere there is water

Milmomma 05-23-2011 07:49 PM

How to pick just one? We go to the pool like 4 times a week. (no ac) Also water park, zoo, amusement park. About anything we can to get out of the hot box, I mean house.

emmasmommy 05-23-2011 07:58 PM

i picked zoo but we have 'deck parties' almost nightly LOL

marnel 05-23-2011 08:01 PM

Lake/Beach here :)

NatalieKW 05-23-2011 08:05 PM

I hope you make a kit for all of my choices! :)

maybe ;)

Jengerbread88 05-23-2011 08:08 PM

Last year we made it to the Federal Reserve museum, and to a few sites around the neighboring cities. This year we hope to make it to the marble museum!

taracotta7 05-23-2011 08:10 PM

I voted zoo. We have a season pass so we go ALL THE TIME. :) We do more but that is the most visited place for us. :)

Traci Reed 05-23-2011 08:35 PM

if you misunderstood the poll and only voted for one choice because of the wording, feel free to add more votes in the thread :)

kim21673 05-23-2011 08:41 PM

We don't go to the pool but we go to the beach!!! Of course it would be a lot better if it was the OCEAN but the lake will have to do!!! We have two lakes now and have our choice of where to go during to beat the summer heat. The new beach looks pretty sweet and I am sure we'll be spending lots of time there this summer.

We are pretty fortunate to live where we do...there are TONS of parks in our town and now we have the two beaches. We are set for summer!!

I voted for the park, picnics, zoo, library and festivals...our city does tons throughout the summer. We also have a membership to Brookfield Zoo and go there quite a bit during the summer and we hang out at the library once a week for story tme!!!

MamaBee 05-23-2011 08:44 PM

we are picnic at park people... usually a couple times a week... we do a lot of rummage saling, too!!

cbettua 05-23-2011 08:48 PM

I choose pool, but we love the beach too

cardinalskate 05-23-2011 08:53 PM

I picked quite a few, but I'd also add the Botanical Gardens. We have awesome gardens here and we go all the time.

melrio 05-23-2011 08:55 PM

Lots of picnics this time of year and getting our pool ready for the hot days ahead but my ultimate fav thing to do in the summer is....CAMPING! We have the best friends evah!!!! And camping with them is the bestest!

mrshobbes 05-23-2011 08:59 PM

I picked picnic, pool, and the movies :)

Giseli Freitas 05-23-2011 09:04 PM

I voted Pool, BBQ and Movies. Those are the things we did a LOT last Summer. :)

Sarah8914 05-23-2011 09:06 PM

It's too hot to do much here if it doesn't involve WATER!!

mariewilcox 05-23-2011 09:14 PM

We don't go far to enjoy our summers. We live in an area where people flock to in the summer for its lakes and hiking, etc. The lake is 30 feet from our front porch, so we swim, sail, kayak, canoe, and water ski on a daily basis. We live nestled amongst mountains and many lakes and the Appalachian trail runs about 5 miles outside our town so we camp, hike, bike, picnic, etc. We have quite a few festivals - logging days, Maine craftsman festival, blueberry festival, old home week, etc. We have street dances and a huge 4th of July celebration with a town BBQ, parade, games, craft sales, rummage sales, and a live band that plays on the waterfront all night. We spend almost every night out by the fire watching the wildlife on the lake (moose, birds, beaver, deer).

We do leave the mountain a few times in the summer to hit a couple water and amusement parks about 2 hours away.

mummytothree 05-23-2011 09:58 PM

We do the zoo, the drive in movies theater and usually the park. Sometimes we bbq at the park, sometimes we just bring a picnic and sometimes we go the Hot Dog Man in town (we have a street vender hot dog man, with a little cart and everything ) and take out hot dogs and chipos to the park!!

MommaTrish 05-23-2011 10:19 PM

I checked pool, park, picnics, library, and zoo. But really our main things are ZOOOOOOOOOO (we love the zoo lol) and playing in the sprinkler in the backyard.

nun69 05-23-2011 10:25 PM

I picked everything but the roller rink and library :)

jessica31876 05-23-2011 10:53 PM

I picked everything because we can do all those here.

jessica31876 05-23-2011 10:54 PM

you missed camping & fishing which we will also be doing alot of this summer break

kristijoy 05-24-2011 12:04 AM

When the sun comes out in Oregon we all go outside!! The pool is definately one of our favorites as is just hanging out in the front yard and riding bikes, playing in the sand and trips to the park for picnics!

Andrea G 05-24-2011 12:14 AM

We have passes to a local amusement park (and it has a pool park attached as well), and our SIL has a pool, and we have a pass to a children's museum. That along with golf lessons, basketball camps, swimming lessons, etc!

I'm hoping to fit the library in every few weeks as well.

Should be fun stuff! :)

rach3975 05-24-2011 12:16 AM

My list has to break down into 2 categories, 1 that I do with the kids when it's just me and another that we only do when DH is available because 1:3 doesn't cut it.

The kids and I go to the pool, the playground (sometimes with picnic), and just play outside at our house. We also watch videos and do cooking and craft projects.

For a true staycation when DH is also home, we'd add the zoo, the aquarium, and the children's museum. I have 2 kids prone to taking off (and always in opposite directions), so I don't do those without adult backup.

AmyG 05-24-2011 12:40 AM

We will also do several minor league baseball games (Go Roughriders!) Mostly because the stadium is over and beyond family friendly and the air flow is a million times better than the sauna that is the Rangers Ballpark.

Lyd 05-24-2011 01:26 AM

For a staycation, one thing that my kids absolutely love is to stay a night in a hotel. We will drive 30-60 minutes away, so that they feel like we went on a "trip" and just stay one night somewhere. They love swimming in the hotel pool, getting snacks and watching a movie in our room, eating the free hotel breakfast, etc. I love that we can make them so happy doing something so simple!

sigmakap95 05-24-2011 05:36 AM

I take my oldest to a water park for a 'mom & son' day

scrappurple 05-24-2011 08:39 AM

We are also planning on going to the Jelly Belly Factory. We haven't been there in years. My 16 yr old dd wants to go. :)

ooohhh - she'll get (well actually you will all get) one of the nifty hats they pass out for the tours. Are you also going to make a stop at the Budweiser Factory for a tour? :)

BrattyMeg 05-24-2011 04:38 PM

bumping up get those votes in!

Amy we do a lot of minor league games..the tix are cheap (BOBO on some days) and the stadium is 2 mins from our house!

Aimeemomof2+ 05-24-2011 08:20 PM

Amusement Parks/water parks.

We have an amusement park 2.5 hours north, and another 1.5 hours south from us. They both have water parks attached.

We usually get season passes to one, and go at least every other week.

JenTapler 05-25-2011 05:24 AM

Well, technically it's always summer here, so things don't really change all that much since my child hasn't started "real school" yet. I'm sure that will change next year when he starts kindergarten and has an actual summer break.

But we go to the beach at least once a week. My 4-yr-old goes 2 additional times during the week with my Mom while I'm at work, so this is a BIG part of his weekly activities every single week - swimming, surfing, playing in the sand, tumbling in the waves - that is how he spends his days!

We also do a ton of hiking and camping.

We don't have a zoo or amusement park or theme park or anything exciting like that on Maui, so those things are out. There is a nice aquarium, but at $20 admission, we only do that a few times a year. And museums and such are pretty overun with tourists so we avoid them for the most part.

So yeah - beach, hiking, camping - they weren't on the list though...

kendallt 05-25-2011 08:03 AM

I voted for everything except the roller rink b/c that's the one thing we don't have closeby. My top choices are anything involving water b/c in the summer, it's brutally HOT here.

We love the zoo and the park, but because of the intense heat, it can sometimes be tough to enjoy those during the summer. One of DD's favorite summertime activities is to hit one of the little ice cream parlors here in town. That kid never tires of ice cream! :p

sczos911 05-25-2011 09:46 AM

State Fair. Baseball games. Beach (but NOT tropical!!). Hiking. Campfires. Ice Cream stand.

FireWolf 05-25-2011 09:47 AM

Here we have a museum year pass, which opens up 100's of museums for us every year. We also go to 2 different amusement parks, 1 here is Holland and 1 in Germany. We also have quite a few different town festivals that we try to attend. Picnics are a must on geocaching days. Pretty much anything to get us out of the heat of an uninsulated, brick house that we call home. Oh, and we also hit the Farmer's Ice Cream stand several times per summer season. It's always hugely busy, but so worth the wait in line.
