any Mac users update to Lion yet?

I'm downloading Lion right now and have to say I'm a bit concerned about switching operating systems but I had a free upgrade so I have to take the plunge now instead of waiting until the kinks are worked out. If you've switched to Lion do you love it? Anyone NOT switching to Lion?

SmallMoments 08-12-2011 02:47 PM

I've switched! There are little things that bug me, but overall I like it!

ooh, what little things are bugging you?

Hmmm... well when I go to finder to look for pics or papers or whatever... I use the layout with the pic above and all the files below (kwim?). Well in the old version it had an arrow to scroll through the pics. Now it just has the "touch your mouse & flip." It goes too fast for me and I always have to back up. (Did that make ANY sense at all??)

Ummm... what else? Oh! There may be a way to fix this, but I don't know what it is... now when I open a file with open with...Photoshop, I have a pop-up that says it's from the internet and do I really want to open it. Not on everything, but most. And because of that, I can't open multiple things at once. It's just one. at. a. time.

Those are the two biggest bugs right now. :)

I upgraded a few weeks ago, I actually really like it, especially the new full screen part!

Julie Billingsley 08-12-2011 03:37 PM

huh... I don't even use a mouse. at all. I use my Wacom. so, I've been wondering how those "gestures" would work for me.

not loving that idea about opening one item at a time. I'll have to figure something out about that.

I'm actually mostly excited about Lion. I've read a bunch about the changes and they all sound SO cool. But since I *just* switched to Mac, I do have concerns about learning another operating system all over.

It's now done downloading, but I haven't restarted my computer to put the change into effect. yet.

i haven't switched yet - i read in the app store that lion wouldn't run windows for mac - does anyone know if that's true? i don't use word and excel a lot, but i do use them sometimes. i know that when my friend upgraded to lion, it switched her touchpad so that when you used two fingers and swiped up it now scrolls down (like an iphone) instead of up - it was bugging her b/c she was used to the other way. however, i read that you can change that in your preferences ...

well, I've installed and restarted and besides having to download java to even open photoshop, I'm not really noticing any startling changes. One minor thing I noticed is that Dashboard now doesn't overlay on top of your current screen... it now has a lego-like background that blocks seeing your desktop/program. I think that background will be nice because it got really hard to see sometimes since Dashboard was on top of whatever else was open. Another change is in Finder, when you are using Thumbnail view, there doesn't look to be a size adjustment slider to make the thumbnails bigger. I never used it anyway, so no big loss. I think Coverflow is better- nicer background to see the images on. ooh, and I LOVE that I can drag from any direction to make the screen larger, instead of just the lower right corner. I like Lauchpad's look- very iPhone-ish. Not sure on Mission Control yet. Beyond that, I'm not seeing much in obvious changes.

I don't know about running Windows-- you mean BootCamp? Or do you mean just buying Office for a Mac? I was looking at prices lately and it *looks* like it would work with Office 2011 for Mac. Here is one link, but I've never shopped there. The specs just say it must be Mac OS X version 10.5.8 or later... and that should include Lion! I'm still debating between getting Excel or getting Numbers.

I did. I don't use a touchpad so gestures don't work for me.

Things I dislike:

new calendar look. I like the new functions of the calendar but hate the leather desk calendar look.

disappearing scroll bars. It just didn't work for me and using my bamboo so I went back the normal scroll bars in the settings.

resume. Sometimes I don't want the windows to resume when I quit. But I found out that if you hold down option when you go to file>quit you have a choice to close windows.

What I like:

new finder. I happen to like it.

resize from any edge.

better auto-correction.

better spotlight.

What I love:

Launchpad.

Mission Control. I use this a lot.

Full screen! I don't use it much since I have a 27in screen but it is awesome.

Mail. Love the new mac mail.

SmallMoments 08-12-2011 04:55 PM

I'm fairly certain my husband has used word... I'm not 100% though.

I'm a new Mac user, too, Julie and so far those are my only complaints and it's been pretty easy to learn! :)

What programs have disappearing scroll bars? I haven't found that yet.

Where are you noticing full screen? What wasn't full screen before that now is?

I noticed it in Chrome and iTunes the most. They aren't there until you hover over that area. For some reason my pen was not picking them up at all so I just switched it to always show scroll bars.

Previously apps, photobooth and most programs would not go full screen. I would have to drag the corners out and resize every time. Now it goes full screen (and even without a toolbar in Chrome) for me.

Maybe they changed the default, because I'm also using Chrome and the scroll bar is there. I haven't changed any settings...unless it picked up settings from Snow Leopard? i'll have to jump into iTunes to see if it disappears for me.

Ah, I haven't gotten into any apps yet. So that is why I haven't noticed fullscreen. I don't do much besides Chrome, photoshop and illustrator. I see Chrome can go full screen, but I'm not sure how that's of value yet.

I am new to Mac, I probably have had a Mac 2 months and upgraded to Lion. I haven't really noticed any changes. Guess I'm not very observant!
