Help me calm my nerves, please!

I have my very first doctor's appointment on Friday with my new doc. I haven't actually been to a doctor in about 8-9 years. Yes, I know, bad me. I hate doctors, needles, anything to do with the whole medical thing.

Truthfully, if we didn't want to do IVF in the next year or two I wouldn't be going now, but in order to even think about getting pregnant we need to get me healthy and as pain free as possible.

I had a bad car accident 19years ago and then a serious horseback riding accident about 18 years ago severely injuring my spine. I've dealt with it for the most part drug free and on my own for the past 13 years. However that has taken a serious toll on my weight because I can't "do" much physically.

Right now I'm having panic attacks just thinking of Friday and all that poking and prodding and the serious possibilty of surgery in my future. Plus a think a great deal of fear over her telling me a baby cannot be in our future. I just called this afternoon and didn't expect to get in for at least a couple of weeks, but no, 8:45 am this Friday so now i'm freaking out.

Thankfully, I don't have to go alone...DH will be working from home so he can take me or I doubt I'd even go.

(((HUGS))) all the bloodwork and stuff is so hard... will be praying for you!

adrianka 08-31-2011 12:19 PM

Wish you all the luck there is.

I feel ya. Deep breathing helps. A lot. Imagine how much better you will feel with all the information from the doctor on what you need to do to feel better. Having a plan is good! Good luck!

Thanks girls! I'm trying really hard to look at this positively, but it's really hard right now.

This is the hardest part because they can never find my veins so they dig for them and it HURTS something awful!

Good luck...I"ll be thinking of you!! Make sure to really hydrate yourself and ask if they have a numbing cream they can use on you prior to using any needles....it can take a little bit of time to numb you...but if it helps calm your fears then it might be worth it!!

Also are you having the blood work at just a dr.s office!?!?! Or are you going to have to have it at a "lab" or hospital!??! If it's at a hospital don't be afraid to ask for a nurse from the ER, or the NICU, they are usually better trained at inserting needles in "hard" patients. Remember it can't hurt to ask!!!!

To be honest, I have no idea what all will be done in the doctor's office. Being that I've never really been to the doctor here, except for a quick, "gimme meds, my back is out and I can't move" trip or 2 trips to the ER for an allergic reaction and a mammogram due to some bleeding several years ago, I just don't know. I know that a lot of things are different here in Holland than they are in the US, where I'm from, but I don't know just how different yet.

I do know the dentists do NOT have gas here and that sucks.:thumbdown:

DH is laughing at me so he's not a whole lot of help either.

MamaBee 08-31-2011 05:48 PM

Good Luck, sweets!! Drink a lot of water... ;) I pray that you have good results!

NeverendingJen 08-31-2011 06:08 PM

good luck hon!!

FireWolf 09-02-2011 06:12 AM

Thanks everyone!

Well, now I know why DH was laughing at me. Things are done SO differently here than what I'm used to in the US. Doc thinks I've got nerve damage so I go on 75mg Diclofenac(sodium) for 2-3 weeks and some physical therapy for a while. Not sure how long for the PT but it's the first time in the 18 years since my accident that PT has ever even been considered. Go back next Friday.

cardinalskate 09-02-2011 07:44 AM

Glad that first trip went well! PT makes so much sense, too. And going back regularly may help ease your fear of doctors, too!
