Can I share some exciting news about Keira?

She had her MRI on Thursday & the results are great, the tumor is so much smaller than it was, from 8cm to about 2cm. Surgery will be in the near future we're guessing.

And here's some more exciting news for her & her brother.

She has been approved for MAKE A WISH. (FYI, kids with life threatening conditions, not terminal cases, that's what I always assumed too)

We have to start going through the process, I filled out the first round of paperwork, and then said wishes are usually granted within 12 months. Keira wants to go to Disney World to meet the princess, and since that seems to be the most popular request, I don't think it'll take that long, there is another family that said it only took about a month to get their date.

They even have their own resort down there for this kind of thing. It's called Give Children the World. http://www.gktw.org/

Anyone else ever had a wish granted? I've tried to find as much as I can from blogs & such on what people's trips are like, it all sounds amazing, you don't pay for anything, lots of surprises while you're there & you go straight to the front of the line for all the rides & things.

I'm so excited for her! She deserves something this amazing after all this crap!!

Thank you all again for your prayers & support!

So exciting!!!! I have a friend where her little boy was fighting Leukemia and got a wish.......they went to Disney World also!!!! They said is was a wonderful experience. (They have been to DW several times apart from the Grant a Wish but said it was their favorite time they have gone!) The good news......little Nathan is remission and has got the all clear the last few scans that they removed his port! We are having a super hero celebration for him in about a week! :)

I am so glad that you are getting good news on her scans. Sounds like the treatments are working! WAHOOOOO!!!!! ((HUGS))

So happy for you all Vanessa! 2 cm from 8 sounds pretty amazing by itself but then the news of the Make A Wish being approved as well? Wow! I hope it comes through quickly for you guys!!

digideb 09-10-2011 04:22 PM

One of my roommates from college, her 8 year old daughter is dying from Leukemia. This is her 5th time getting it & she won't make it much longer at all. But, she & her family went to DW a few months ago! What was so neat, is her parents didn't tell her or her 2 sisters that she was awarded her wish or that they were going. So, they just planned everything, packed their suitcases & one day while they were watching TV, they just said, "Hey girls, wanna go to Disney World? The car is packed!" & they left right then! I know that had to be an amazing experience!
So, I'm thrilled for y'all!!! & for Keira! I've been praying for her so much! She's such a trooper & fighter! :)

great news!!

Congrats on MAW!! I've read great things about GKTW on Disboards

marlathrall 09-10-2011 04:30 PM

Fabulous news. I will continue to pray that things go great.

My husband was diagnosed with hodgkin's lymphoma when he was 16. He was approved by Make a Wish and went to the Superbowl in 1998. (I think.) They flew his parents, brother and sister to California and he and his older brother went to the game. Superbowl tickets were too expensive for all five of them, but I think they did lots of other fun stuff too. I will have to ask him how long the entire process took, etc. His cancer came back again when he was 19, but we just celebrated ten years cancer free last March! He lives a completely normal life and you would never know that he was so sick.

I love happy cancer stories. We don't hear them near enough.

Thanks you guys! I know when Keira starts to understand exactly what's going to happen, she's going to be thrilled!

I'm just thrilled about the tumor! And that she gets to do something so wonderful.

MissKim 09-10-2011 05:17 PM

You should definitely check out the DisBoards. They have a whole bunch of WISH-trip people on there. Here's a link to the big thread: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2626769

I had a student who got a wish, although not through MAW. I read his trip report. It does sound like they go out of their way to make those trips extra magical. I hope you have a wonderful time!

pomi 09-10-2011 05:22 PM

That's wonderful news Vanessa! I'm thrilled for Keira. My cousin was a MAW recipient (it's been about 20 years) He got a snake LOL It was a wonderful experience for him.

Freckles 09-10-2011 06:32 PM

That sounds like a fantastic initiative, the MAW!
Good to hear the results were good!!

SweetMelissa 09-10-2011 06:34 PM

Congrats! My daughter Rachel just got approved for a Make-A-Wish trip (to Disney World or Disneyland -- not sure which one). Her wish granters told us that she has to be three before she goes on the trip but they can get us dates so we leave on her birthday or the day after (depending on if its Disney World or Disneyland).

Also great news on the tumor!

Lyd 09-10-2011 06:35 PM

That is awesome Vanessa! I hope you guys, but especially Keira, have tons of fun!

g8rbeckie 09-10-2011 07:19 PM

That's WONDERFUL Vanessa!!! I hope the treatments continue to go well until her surgery, and I'm soooo excited about Keira going to Disneyworld. It's so amazing that organizations like Make A Wish exist to make horrible times like this seem a little better.

joelsgirl 09-10-2011 07:24 PM

Totally exciting. I'm so glad the tumor is shrinking. Hope you guys have a blast!

Melissa Bennett 09-10-2011 07:35 PM

Oh, such incredible news about the tumor and MAW!!! You guys really deserve to have something so wonderful done for ya'll!!

ayaandjudah 09-10-2011 08:24 PM

I know of two families that went to GKTW and both absolutely loved it. You'll get shirts that announce you as a wish family and you will get extra special treatment.

It's an amazing experience.

And yay for shrinking tumors. I hope it continues to shrink until it disappears

*Celeste* 09-10-2011 08:44 PM

I have a friend that did it with her 7 year old son and they had a fantastic time. How exciting! I'm so glad she's doing well!

rach3975 09-10-2011 09:06 PM

scrapperjade 09-11-2011 11:00 AM

When Bree's little guy, Mason, was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia), he was granted a wish the the Make a Wish Foundation. He asked to go to Disneyland, and I don't think that it took too long to get there after he wished it.

As far as I can remember, the whole family of 4 got tickets to Disneyland, California Adventures, Lego Land, & Sea World. Their plane tickets, accommodations and vehicle rental were paid for, and they got money for food & for spending. Pretty much everything was paid for. They took extra money to buy souvenirs for friends & family, but the trip cost them very little.

nietis 09-11-2011 11:34 AM

What a great progress and news :) I hope her wish comes true real soon! :)

color of my heart 09-11-2011 11:58 AM

YAY! i'm so happy to hear that there's progress <3 i hope kiera's wishes come true! she's a fighter, that one (:

and make a wish is AMAZING. my cousin was diagnosed with leukemia when she was a year old. they sent the family of four to disneyworld when she was five (she's now 14, and cancer free for almost 6 years). i remember that they said it was absolutely amazing.

Jengerbread88 09-11-2011 03:11 PM
