Am I alone in this thought?
 

Maybe it is because i'm not a teenager or kid anymore but I find the movies for this generation aren't the same as when we were growing up. I'm not talking about the academy award winners or anything i'm talking about movies like dirty dancing and sixteen candles.. ferris bueller's day off..

I feel like my kids (well oldest especially) is missing out on something LOL!

I don't like any that you mentioned either. I've never been big on teen movies. Well, except Empire Records, that's one of my all time favorites.

Well it doesn't have to be the movies that i liked just movies that i'm not sure really LOL! Empire records too :) Heathers.. did you like that one?

I tried to watch Empire Records, but I finally turned it off half way through...definitely didn't do it for me. I also didn't love all the 80s teen cult movies. I did like 16 Candles and Pretty in Pink, but I really didn't like Breakfast Club or Better Off Dead much at all. Some Kind of Wonderful was probably my favorite "teen" flick.

I didn't like Heathers. Too dark for me.

I liked some kind of wonderful :)

I'm not saying that I don't appreciate movies with real plot lines or movies with great acting and storylines but I do love a good "chill" movie :)

lol! I grew up with that one. My mom's name is Heather... and that's like her favorite movie. I had to watch it a lot. Now I don't like it, but I don't dislike it either.

The Breakfast Club and Dirty Dancing are the greatest.movies.of.all.time.

I was never a Dirty Dancing fan either. I mean, I like it okay, but my friends were WAY into it.

I can't stand either of the two leads in Dirty Dancing. Their faces bother me.

I feel the same way. I often wonder if any of the movies coming out lately will ever be considered "classics". There was a genre of movies from the 80's/90's (like them or not) that we all remember. I could hardly tell you much about anything that has come out in the last 5 years.

John Hughes directed so many of these films: 16 Candles, Breakfast Club, Some Kind of Wonderful, Ferris Bueller, She's having a Baby, and many others.

Movies I watched overandover growing up - Dirty Dancing, Officer and a Gentleman, West Side Story and Labyrinth :D -almost forgot Say Anything! LOVE that one

Movies I watch overandover now... ^^still those, but also added The Vow, The Notebook and The Time Traveler's Wife... Yea, I'm a Rachel McAdams fan :) -oh, and a fan of movies that make me cry :crying:

I think it's a question of perspective... my parents didn't like my teen-movies at all, and I found their stuff hopelessly out. That's just the way it has to be, I guess.
I notice it when I watch old Disney-movies with my kids, the ones I used to watch when I was small: my children still love them, but I can't help seeing how old-fashioned they are compared to the newer movies like "Brave" or "Wreck-it Ralph", which have much more theatrical depth and drama and deal with a totally different perception of childhood and growing up... these things change dramatically, and it's tough to keep up.

Ohhh, I LOVED Dirty dancing, and still do!

The 80s genre was after my high school years but I did see some of them with my younger sister.

For my high school years it was Grease, American Graffiti, Saturday Night Fever, Blue Lagoon, Fame, Fame, Animal House, Caddyshack, Smoky and the Bandit.

I try to introduce the kids to some of "my" movies that they might enjoy now...ET, Indiana Jones, The Princess Bride, National Lampoon's Vacation, Big, Back to the Future and they don't get them. They think because they're "old", they're no good. Granted some of those aren't "feel good" but what I consider classics.

The only movies that seem to work for them are Tim Burton's...Beetlejuice, Nightmare Before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands - I think because they like Johnny Depp now due to Pirates and Alice in Wonderland, they'll give the older ones a try. But they're also fantastical and not really "dated" looking, so maybe that's why they like them.

My kidlets watch my 'old' movies (if appropriate lol). A while ago I was worried they were missing on on 'classics' such as Wizard of Oz, so that expanded our collection somewhat too

I think part of the problem is the amount of movies that come out now. New movies were a big deal "back in the day". Now there are so many movies coming out each week and even the highly anticipated films are out to rent like 2 months after they are theaters. It seems like they just aren't putting the time into developing films like they used to. They also seem to be stand out with shocking sexual/violence/special effects instead of awesome storylines.

I would say there are some great future cult classics that have come out in the last bit. I am especially a fan of Judd Apatow films such as Superbad, Pineapple Express, This Is 40, etc. He was also the director, writer, producer of Freaks and Geeks :)

I agree with you completely, Jenn! I was going to say something to that effect myself. There are SO many movies coming out every week that they just don't make the impact that they did then, IMO. I don't think most kids these days equate going to the movies or watching a movie with the treat that it seemed to be back then.

While I LOVE many of the 80's movies mentioned, I can't say I would have loved them as much if they didn't come out at a time when they 'spoke' to me.

Anyway, Breakfast Club and Dirty Dancing are two of my favorites. My kids aren't quite old enough to 'get' them yet but they have saw them. Dirty Dancing is my absolute favorite, ever. I've watched it a million times. I stopped counting somewhere around 180 times watching it. I used to blast both of the soundtracks too. I am related to Patrick Swayze so my whole family got in to this movie (Roadhouse was another that everyone liked but it didn't hit me the same way) for a time.

I think this is the problem I have with most of them mentioned, they were my mom's movies, and my own teen life wasn't exactly up to what the teen movies showed

I'm kind of glad my own teen life didn't look anything like some of the movies when I was a teen. I sure didn't need that kind of angst!

These are some of my favorites! Along with Grease, Shag, Weird Science, Pretty In Pink, the Breakfast Club, etc. I totally agree. I'm really thinking about introducing Keira to Grease.

At this point Rachel is mainly into cartoon movies. She did sit through Dolphin Tale and loved it (she's a big animal lover like her mama)...I hope she'll enjoy some of the teen movies that I enjoyed back in the 80s. Two I haven't seen mentioned that I remember loving were The Outsiders (every girl at my middle school seemed to be ga-ga over at least one of them) and Adventures in Babysitting.

I didn't love all the angst either. My teen years were under the oppression of a wicked step-father, so I really needed to get away when I watched movies. I liked a lot of the classics instead.

I love the 80s movies. We've started letting ours watch some of the oldies. But ive also been showed at the language in some of the movies we watched as kids!

yes yes and yes...I just bought Dirty Dancing on Blu Ray :) and luckily my kids love the older movies cause I tend to watch them...I am also a Grease fan :) and I do like some of the comical movies like Super Bad, the Hangover Movies, any of the Comic movies (Iron Man, Thor,Spiderman, Batman etc) are going to be some of the classics of this generation

I love all the 80's cult movies. Breakfast club is an all time favorite, I did Love Heathers even with its dark twisted plot line. LOL My kids have watched many of these movies with me (not heathers) but as much as I want them to love them, they just don't get it. They do like Benchwarmers and Napoleon Dynamite maybe that's our kids Cult movies for their Gen?

i loooove all the 80's movies (and some 70's :) ).... and i still love teen movies today :) there have been some good ones in the 2000's - like mean girls, bring it on, juno ... and stuff like high school musical and other disney movies (cinderella story and stuff ... ) speak to the younger teens i'm sure, some of the nicholas sparks movies (like the one w/ miley cyrus) ... i watched a movie called Prom the other day and really liked it :) my standards might not be that high LOL ....

i also think that there is a LOT more TV for tweens/teens now than there was in the 70's/80's (all the shows on nick/disney - i don't even know all the names) -- so that probably is a big part of their culture ...
