Let's Take a Moment of Silence

in honor of my Macbook Pro, who didn't survive an incident involving spilled water and a blue eyed angel.

I actually thought to myself, just moments before my screen went black, that I should put away my computer while Ariana was in my lap at the table, but I ignored my oh so wise inner voice. {sob}

I also planned to leave my computer at home for the weekend, but Joel told me I should take it. Can that make it his fault?

No, no, it's totally my fault, and that's the worst part about it. We took it to the repair shop, and they just called today and said it would cost 100,000 pesos to fix it. I actually yelled that number back at her in disbelief. That's like $2500.

Ya know, A THOUSAND DOLLARS MORE THAN I COULD SPEND TO REPLACE IT.

So I told her we'd come pick up its lifeless body and prepare it for burial tomorrow. I mean, how do you part with something so precious to you? Something you've spent so much time with? Something you've shared all your memories with?

CRY CRY CRY

scrap2day 08-15-2013 08:51 AM

So sorry. :(

MommaTrish 08-15-2013 08:52 AM

Oh no!
:crying:

If it makes you feel better when Ryan was about 18 months he was cuddling me while I was on my old laptop. I kept thinking that I needed to put it off my lap and on the table next to us, but didn't. Well when Ryan dropped his toy he jumped right off my lap, legs tangled in the laptop cord, and pulled it off with him breaking the screen.

Lyd 08-15-2013 09:00 AM

Ugh. So sorry Kellie. :( :(

YepBrook 08-15-2013 09:02 AM

We killed a laptop with water too!!! And several desktop keyboards with coffee. :glare: So, basically... we decided to not get another laptop again. Until we have all this extra money laying around to keep as our 'laptop replacement fund'.

So sorry, Kellie! I do love that you yelled the number back at her. It's ridiculous!!!

glumirk 08-15-2013 09:09 AM

Oh no, Kellie!!! That's got to hurt your heart something serious. No need to place blame...just let yourself grieve. It's ok to be sad. Good luck with a replacement, and I hope you were pretty well backed up v

Beebo 08-15-2013 09:47 AM

So sorry Kellie!

Thanks for understanding. I subscribed to Backblaze a couple of months ago, so I've spent the last week downloading the contents of my computer to my husband's computer. We can't really afford to replace mine right now, so he's been kind enough to share with me.

I think that a desktop computer might be a good idea. It'd just mean sharing a computer for the next year before we get back to the PI. (We're going stateside in December until June 2014) It'd keep me from dragging my computer all over the house and maybe make me a little more disciplined in using it. Thanks for the suggestion!

Valgal 08-15-2013 09:59 AM

Oh no! :thumbdown::thumbdown::thumbdown:

I killed a laptop with a bowl of Rice Krispies. Dumped the whole bowl on it.

eranslow 08-15-2013 10:03 AM

So sorry Kellie!! :( Seriously can't believe the price they quoted you! Craziness!!

I also killed a laptop - but with orange juice. It was definitely a sad day :(

Nettio 08-15-2013 10:14 AM

Oh Kellie, I would die. It was an accident though I wouldn't beat yourself up about it too much.

I don't know if this is an option for you being overseas, but have you called Apple to see what it would cost to have them fix it? I ask because when I had issues with my old MBP, I took it to a local repair shop and they quoted me $750 to fix it. When I took it to Apple without Apple Care and way out of warranty, they told me they could refurb it for $250. Yours might be too far gone to repair but it might not hurt to ask so you know all your options. And if your original quote was from Apple feel free to ignore this. I couldn't tell from your post if it was or not. :)

carrie1977 08-15-2013 10:39 AM

I cry for you. I am so sorry! What a crappy ordeal.

Julie Billingsley 08-15-2013 07:45 PM

that is horrible Kellie. :( And you really haven't had it that long, have you?

rach3975 08-15-2013 11:16 PM

Oh, no! I'm sorry. I spilled lemonade on a laptop 10+ years ago, back when I was in grad school and we had no extra money to replace it. The repair shop told me it was totaled because the repair would have been more than the computer was worth, but he suggested that since it was fairly new I send it in to the manufacturer and see what happened. Neither of us expected them to do anything, but they surprised me by not questioning what happened and repairing the screen under warranty. I hope you get lucky, too, and are able to get a much better estimate than this one!

jk703 08-15-2013 11:48 PM

Oh no!!! (And I was just reading that drinking thread!!)

I hope you can get it fixed somehow for way cheaper. I'm so sorry. I think I'd be crying and going into withdrawal with out mine!

Kara 08-16-2013 08:46 AM

Ugh!!! So sorry, Kellie!

Sherri Tierney 08-16-2013 12:28 PM

:( So sorry! My little redheaded angel knocked our first laptop off the arm of the couch (big wide arms, typically would have been really safe there) and ruined it. After that we decided no laptops until she was much older. We did end up getting a laptop when the boy was small but we've been accident free with it, thankfully. However, the laptop rarely gets used. We are desktop people 99% of the time. I'm not a laptop fan (and now I get 60 of them to deal with at work every day! LOL )

dana 08-31-2013 09:21 PM

i just had to revisit this thread - because on monday my youngest spilled my drink (i shouldn't have had it so close to the computer) all over the computer. my plastic keyboard cover was no match :( i've been on vacation all week - and will be visiting the mac store next week to figure out where to go from here .. :(

i hadn't backed up in a month bc of summer vacations - so here's the obligatory reminder to all to BACKUP :)

Thanks for the reminder. I keep saying I'm going to do that at least every sat night. Well here we are. Going over to start the backup now.

CA Dreamer 09-01-2013 12:08 PM

Ugh.. :(
This happened to me too. My 2 year old spilled a glass of water on my bedside table--my laptop was stowed on underneath. The computer was dead, dead, dead, but I was able to get everything off of it. The HD was ok. I took it to a computer store and he opened it up and took the HD out and transferred everything to an EHD. I hope your data can be saved too.

Laura_A 09-01-2013 03:18 PM

That's awful! :crying:

rach3975 09-01-2013 04:56 PM

Oh, no! Sorry that happened. I hope they can help you at the Apple Store.
