Laptop is dead!!

I’m so freaking sad!! My parents arrived from France 2 days ago and I was so happy but I knew my dad would finally be able to fix my keyboard which some of the keys had stopped working a few weeks back. My dad can fix anything… usually… except he freaking broke it. It won’t even turn on anymore. He took the case off, looked if there was anything that looked loose or amiss. And tried to turn it on and it didn’t even start. He started taking it apart layer by layer (keyboard is one of the last layers in my Lenovo laptop), didn’t see anything, put it back together and it was dead.
He thinks he fried it with static electricity! What the!!!!! I’m so beyond sad and frustrated that I’ve probably lost a whole bunch of stuff, programs, games etc…

SweetChar 06-06-2024 09:11 PM

Oh, gosh Lea. That's soooo sad and frustrating. I feel your pain. Maybe a computer repair shop can access your files?

lorigaud 06-06-2024 10:05 PM

Oh no.... I'm so sorry! :(

AmieN1 06-06-2024 10:25 PM

Oh no! So sorry!

LynnZant 06-06-2024 10:41 PM

I'm so sorry that happen to your laptop! Tonight, I just finished scrapping three pages that I started almost a month ago. It was a nightmare getting a new computer. My cloud still won't sync, but I don't care at this point. It just feels good to scrap again. I hope you can get your Lenovo fixed soon! Maybe it's something simple. Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

rach3975 06-06-2024 11:10 PM

Oh, no! I'm so sorry!

nietis 06-07-2024 12:05 AM

OH noooooo. So sorry :(

Robin Carlton 06-07-2024 09:14 AM

Oh NO Lea! That seriously sucks!! OMG I'd be so heartbroken and stressed! Will you be able to get a replacement anytime soon?

Willemijne DSI 06-07-2024 09:19 AM

Oh no that is devastating! Problems with electronics are so hard :(

Oh no! That's such a bummer!

Saar 06-07-2024 09:55 AM

I'm so sorry to read this Lea.

Kimberly27 06-07-2024 10:58 AM

Oh no! I am so sorry! I would pull the hard drive to see if you can recover anything.

allyanne 06-07-2024 11:35 AM

I'm sorry--this is so devastating! Hoping that you can get it fixed and recover your data.

HeatherB 06-07-2024 03:21 PM

Oh no! That's awful! I hope you are able to recover your data.

tjscraps 06-08-2024 10:59 AM

Oh no, I'm sorry Lea :(

bcgal00 06-08-2024 11:49 AM

That is awful. I sure hope that you can get it repaired at a decent cost or that you replace it with something you'll really love. I am going to have to replace my PC and my laptop in the next year and I am just dreading it.

It sucks to lose everything on it.

Leablahblah 06-08-2024 01:08 PM

I dropped it off at a repair shop in the city. I hope they can fix it. Both my dad and the guy think it's the motherboard and the guy said they have a way to clean it after a power surge (which we had within the past few days).

At least I have Backblaze so not everything would be lost... but still! starting from fresh sucks! I'd rather keep my old computer!

I was able to put back together my old PC but it didn't have any wifi connection so I had to order a wifi adapter last night and it arrived today at lunch so I'm all set to scrap I think. I have an older version of Photoshop. I hope I have my styles saved up on my EHD. We will see...

Just hoping I hear back from the guy at the beginning of the week with some good news.

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

LJSDesigns 06-10-2024 12:25 PM

Hope it can be fixed, Lea. Good luck.

Leablahblah 06-12-2024 02:43 PM

My husband called yesterday for an update. They only just got done with doing a motherboard cleaning/recovery thing and are giving the computer some rest time before attempting to turn it on again... the wait is killing me!

Good thing I can still scrap in the meantime on my old desktop computer though.

nietis 06-12-2024 09:45 PM

Fingers-crossing for you, Lea! I really hope they can recover it :)

Leablahblah 06-14-2024 03:30 PM

Well the report came back and I need a new motherboard. While the first guy we got on the phone didn't seem to think it could recover all my data and programs, the lady we gave the ok to do the work today said it is possible that it could just start up as normal. But we will just have to wait for the part (maybe 2 weeks) and see once swapped.

When my husband has had to replace the motherboard in my pc, everything started up completely normally and all my stuff was still there. We back up regularly of course just in case, but thankfully I didn't have to deal with restoring anything. I hope that's the case with yours!

Thank you for the positive feedback! I hope it's the case here too!

Leablahblah 09-04-2024 11:02 AM

Here is an update on my poor laptop

The guys at the repair shop finally gave me another update. After ordering and returning a second motherboard from China (because the return window was closing and other problems were still not fixed) they asked me if I wanted them to order another one from Canada this time. But they couldn't find a compatible screen (or backlight?) in the meantime and the keyboard is still messed up.

I said no I'll come pick it up! It's been 3 months!

So my computer still won't turn on because they put my fried motherboard back in.

My dad said to send it to him to France where he lives (I'm in the US now) so he can try to fix it himself but I don't know if I should risk mailing it?? It's going to be expensive, will it arrive safely??

or do I try to find another repairman here?

Ugh!! I'm lucky that I still have another old desktop at home to still scrap but it sucks working on such an old and slow machine. My internet keeps competing with my husband who works from home most of the time.

At least today my husband is at the office and I can use all the internet bandwidth to download some parts of my Backblaze files. Yesterday they kept failing because he was home.

I'm so frustrated! Do I just buy another laptop when I have the money?? I need a more powerful machine.

LynnZant 09-04-2024 11:48 AM

I would buy another one if you can afford it. It sounds like it has been nothing but headaches for you to try and fix your old one. And what if it can't be fixed? Then you have gone so long without it. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

I'm leaning towards that option for sure. I don't quite have the money for it but at this point it isn't really urgent anymore since I can kinda function without it. It's just a pain.

But now I would need to decide on what new machine to get and it is so OVERWHELMING! I hate major decisions like that...

lovely1m 09-04-2024 02:25 PM

I had to buy a new one this summer, too. It was really hard to figure out what to buy.

What did you get and are you happy with it??

nietis 09-04-2024 08:11 PM

I agree with Lynn, I feel that buying a new one is a better option than trying to mail it to France and wait for the uncertainties... Good luck with whatever you choose to get at the end, Lea. Computer shopping is no easy feat with the so many options in the market.

littlekiwi 09-04-2024 11:06 PM

I'd honestly go for a new one too. I was in a similar situation a few years back and decided to invest in new rather than trying to limp my previous laptop along with repairs that may or may not work. Came to the decision as I'd already replaced a hard drive about 6 months earlier with a refurbished HD which in hindsight I should have never done as that died a few months down the track

tjscraps 09-04-2024 11:11 PM

That's the first time I've heard of sending things to Canada to be fixed - we are always sending our stuff south to the USA to be fixed lol I hope you figure out a solution, it sucks when you have to use something so slow!

It wasn't to send it to Canada but rather to order a new motherboard from Canada to send to them to try and fix it. I think the part just happened to be in Canada.

Cheryl Ashcraft 09-05-2024 03:44 PM

I'd definitely invest in a new one. Laptops should last 3-5 years, and most last longer given how they are treated and maintained. So if you're already at the 5-10 year range, I wouldn't invest any more money into the current laptop.

Thanks Cheryl! I think 3-5 years is insanely low! I've had mine for 6 years but I invested in a good quality machine (Lenovo) and had upgraded it to be even more powerful so I'm a little miffed.

nietis 09-05-2024 08:10 PM

In my experience, I agree with Cheryl, no matter how powerful the laptop you bought, especially windows operating ones, 5 years seems to be the threshold age for them.

That makes way more sense lol

bestcee 09-05-2024 10:40 PM

I'd go for the new one.

It sounds like your hard drive in the laptop is still working though? It's just the motherboard that is fried? If that's the case, you should be able to find someone local who can use a hard drive cord connector and pull the stuff off your hard drive for you.

Can they do that even if the laptop won't turn on?

Amazon sells enclosures that turn internal hard drives to external USB hard drives. Here's an example, but they have lots of choices:

Interesting! I have never heard of this and will have to look into it. I know that my laptop doesn't have a hard drive but a SSD and I honestly am not sure of the difference. But that could be a nice option!

angels 09-06-2024 12:17 PM

Si ton disque SSD n'est pas défectueux, normalement il doit être possible de le transformer en disque externe

SSD is a “solid state drive” (no moving parts apparently) … there’s likely an option for that type of drive.

Scrap-therapy 09-07-2024 03:28 PM

Leablahblah 09-11-2024 02:24 PM

And now my old desktop is acting up!! I was in the middle of saving a layout when both my screens went blank as if the computer was sleeping. And I couldn’t wake them up. I tried unplugging the screens, restarting the computer… sometimes it works and a few minutes after loading it goes blank again. This could be so many different issues according to what I’ve been reading. This is the worst day!! Between having to clean my dog’s runny poop all over the house and deck every 15 minutes… and now this!

Memaw2Wm 09-11-2024 05:14 PM

How awful … hope you can figure it out.

Leablahblah 09-12-2024 02:11 PM

I think it's a graphics card issue with Photoshop specifically. I was able to work on something while making sure that I don't use too many programs at once.
