I can't recall which program you said you were running, but paths are slightly different on CS6, so if the directions/tutorials are written for cs5 and before, you might possibly find yourself...

Don't forget, you can also change the size of the PATHS and CHANNELS thumbnails too. Although, for myself, I don't much care about the size of those, but maybe you do.
