We make our own popcorn salt (just grind regular kosher in a coffee grinder we have set aside for spices) so that we can get the salt into the nooks and crannies. We mix it with garlic or other spices for our own popcorn spice mixes. But it also helps that we just pop on the stovetop with a little coconut or peanut oil in a big pan (sort of like a giant jiffy pop).
Occasionally we toss in some butter, too, but sometimes, we're happy just with the spice blend. It does require a little time to retrain your mouth when you're so used to the heavy flavor of the microwave variety. I can't eat it or movie popcorn anymore because they taste so 'chemical' to me now.
