All of the small kits that I have that are specific themes have around 8 to 10 papers. And have between 30 to 50 items in the kit. 2 to 3 solids in a kit of that size would be perfect IMO. Several of those kits have 1 particular element in 4 or 5 colors. That to me is unnecessary since the element isn't even theme specific (a star). 2 colors would be fine.

Grabbing from another kit works for you. Some people don't know how to recolor items. I have passed on buying kits because of not having items that I would use or want. One thing I do look for is solid colors because then I know that the texture of all the papers will be the same.
