Tax records are especially good because we have paid taxes forever. That is how I found a good number of my ancestors.

I started before Ancestry and one of the first things I learned was to check those old courthouse records. I spent many hours at the library in the genealogy section (my county library has an awesome section built by the county genealogy society) looking through microfilm of old newspapers, census records and probate records. I am thankful that technology has advanced so that quite a few of these records are online but in all reality it is just a small fraction of the resources available.
