I only have a daughter so I can't help you much with boy-specific gifts but I have found that the toys that imitate "real life" are the ones that get the most play. For example, for my daughter (who's almost 7 now), the play food and kitchen, the doll stroller/crib/highchair, etc, were gifts she got when she was around 2-3yo and she still plays with them from time to time. So you may not be that far off with the play kitchen. Maybe you could start with some play food first. Oh, and maybe one of those toy shopping carts. Even when she turned 6, my daughter was still asking for a shopping cart (but she didn't get one because she's just too tall for the ones that are sold at TRU and Target)

A tricycle could also be a possibility.
