That's something I meant to say earlier, too. On a more limited budget, we don't eat a lot of steaks or big meat. We eat meat incorporated in other things because it stretches more. About once or twice a week we have chicken or pork that is separate because DH is a meat lover and really misses it if we don't. It's healthier because I can get by using less meat overall, and it's a good stretch, depending on what we're having.
The other thing, like someone mentioned, takes some work, but I definitely shop loss leaders - those sales on front pages of grocery ads that are really cheap...I stock up as often as I can. And if I can get boneless/skinless chicken breasts for less than $1.80/lb, I buy $50 worth to stock up. I do have a chest freezer so that's a help.
