Are they actual bees or are they hornets/wasps/yellow jackets. I think it is the time of year they start making new homes and getting ready for the winter. We've had a couple come in the house lately (wasps) due to the kiddos leaving the door open. Maybe the bees made a nest in the lid of the garbage can or something at your mom's.
