I love my Canon G10, even though it doesn't have a fancy zoom. The current G11 is supposed to have a better chip, but I'm in no mood to change models as they go.
Anyway, if you don't want to go complicated, I'd choose one of the Canon PowerShot less fancy models (I mean less fancy than the G series). A friend of mine has a 5-year old one PowerShot, and it's still really good by today's standards. It's up to you whether you want to go the hyperzoom way or prefer something lighter - depends on your preferences and needs.
As you see, I'm a Canon girl, but I've seen magnificent photos with Nikon, Olympus, Sony, Panasonic, etc. The personal preference is mostly about what you're used to. I'd say that these days there's such a choice of good ones that whatever you choose, there's not much of a chance to go wrong.
