I had no idea there might be an internal battery for the popup flash. I looked on my XTi in the battery compartment and don't see a place to replace a small battery like that but maybe I'm looking in the wrong place. But I almost never use the popup flash on my XTi (had it for 3.5yrs) so I doubt mine would ever need replaced if there was one. If I do need to use flash I prefer to use my external flash.
So you could either send it in to Canon for repairs, get an external flash unit or upgrade to a newer body. The only way you'll be able to find another XTi though is by buying a used one, I think the current Rebel models that are available are the XS, T1i or T2i.
I'll be upgrading in February or March but will probably keep mine for backup or let my girls use it since they are both getting into photography like Mom!
