So I looked up the proper rule.. And it's only so and so and I when it's the subject rather than the object of the verb/preposition. *phew* I'm glad to know now.. that i was correct all those years ago thinking it sounded stupid

That's weird you were taught wrong. I was always taught to remove the 'person and' part of the sentence to see if it should be I or me.
