I use both NIV (New International Version) and NLT (New Living Translation). They are both in language that is easy to comprehend.
If you're looking for an even more modern version, The Message is also really good. It reads like someone talking in this day and time. I don't use it for every day study, but I like to read it to get a different perspective. And there are many websites that can give you a guided reading if you want to read the Bible thru w/in the year or a certain time-frame.
