I love smashbooks. Love them! I have only bought the actual K&Company brand smash books but a lot of people make their own with old cardstock and patterened paper. They're basically a spiral bound book with pretty cardstock inside. They come with a pen that has a gluestick on one end. That is really all you need to get started.

I know some people make theirs like scrapbook layouts, but I don't. I literally just open to a page with room and glue stuff down. I do it as I go along. They are nonlinear and the randomness is what I end up loving the best. I would take it along and add as you go. It only takes a few seconds.

For me it's a lot different from an art journal because there's no gesso, paint splatters, or gel medium involved. I just glue stick or staple or washi tape and maybe jot down a sentence or two.

Mine get so fat and covered in stuff that it doesn't matter what theme they started with. I've been working on a wedding themed one recently even though I've been married 15 years.
