Maybe you've got some hardware problem? My DH ran into some quirky things with his computer bios which couldn't handle the size of the hard drive. When it tried to write on the second half of the drive it couldn't do the addressing so it would overwrite the boot sector. Maybe it's something super quirky like that.

DH also says it could be a piece of bad memory. So it would only crash when it tried to write to the particular chip. You would have to run some type of memory diagnostic (found somewhere on control panel).
