I was that kind of reader, too, and I remember 8 and 9 being hard times to find books for myself. But speaking as someone who was reading books about World War 2 concentration camps by age 10, I think The Hunger Games at 8 would have been a little too much for me. I don't think I would have been scared or traumatized, but there was a lot I wouldn't have gotten. My 8-year old is a totally different child--I don't think he'll be ready at 11, never mind earlier.
