Steph, if you find a smaller breed you're attracted to, try doing a google search for breed specific rescues in your area. You could also try contacting the humane society and seeing if they know of good breed specific rescues you can try. Small dogs do usually get snatched up pretty quick, because more people want small dogs. But lots of times there are lots of dogs at the shelter who never make it onto the website. Maybe try swinging by (by yourself) one day this week and seeing what they actually have in the kennels. You might get lucky.
