I'm another one who advocates mixes, simply because they tend to have less medical issues. Every pure bred animal I've owned has had issues, whereas the "mutts" tend to be hardier.
However, if you are interested in pure bred dogs, I'd highly recommend Boston Terriers. They're hypoallergenic, don't shed much, and every one that I've been around was great with kids.
