So we were taught it's because your jaw keeps growing but it's also from your bite. If you have a tooth taken out, your teeth can shift and your bite will change. Same goes for getting a cavity filled and if your bite is slightly off, it can affect teeth movement.
I'm sure there's other reasons but that's what I remember from school and working.
