We also allow the birthday person to choose the meal, home cooked or out at a restaurant. And the birthday person never had to do chores. We made a big deal out of it. I will take the dog out since it's Ben's birthday... They could have parties, but not big expensive affairs. They usually chose a few friends to sleep over. We did have a surprise party for one son once.
