computer virus question

So I got a lovely virus warning when I was downloading something from
4shared today. I did the quick norton scan and it said that an unrepairable virus was detected. What does this mean? What do I do? If I do lose everything from my laptop its not a totally lost cause. I'll lose a few layouts and maybe a few kits. But everything is backed up to my ehd.
Would it be bad to plug in my ehd to this laptop now? Can the virus find its way onto my ehd? Or should I just consider the pics and kits and layouts a lost cause at this moment? Ugh....Help!
