Default good-bye toys!

my kids have waaay too many toys. So today I have instructed each of them to find 5 toys to part with. (I should do this on a daily basis but I think they will revolt so maybe I'll try it weekly. baby steps . . .)

anyway, they've been showing me what they want to get rid of, and I have to restrain myself from asking them "Are you SURE you want to get rid of [Princess Aurora, christmas puppy, etc.]?"

Must just nod, smile and immediately discard. Keep mouth shut.

having big happy moment right now . . . DS has put big wooden Thomas whistle in discard pile!

Wow, good for you! Sometimes I don't even bother asking them (they're 2 and 3 1/2 yrs. old), is that wrong? I just simply know which toys they love and which ones they can care less about... I guess when they're a little bit older, I would have to let them decide!

I put things they haven't been playing with in a box. If no one asks for it after 4-5 months I get rid of it.

They are old enough now I probably ought to start getting their input on the toy removal.

Good for you!! We don't buy our kids very many toys, and somehow they are totally fine (right now markers and paper is my three year olds favourite, and whatever my 9 month old son can pull out of a cupboard is his favourite!). We do the same with the box - putting things they havn't play with for a while in that. With my little one, we rotate toys, one week on one week off... he likes them much better and there is less mess!

If I would asked them, they would say: "mama, I NEED this to play with, its my darling toy..."
to every toy... LOL
So I decided to do this, while they are in kindergarten. but I put it first in the basement and if they do not miss it the next few weeks, I will get it off to trash or something like this.

I really need to do this too! Last time I "got rid" of some of her toys I really just put them in a bag and hid them in our storage area. I'll be darn if she didn't ask me where almost every single one of those toys were LOL!!

My problem is that she plays with everything that she has- even stuffed animals! I am also sentimental and attached when it comes to some of her things so I have a hard time when I ask her what she might want to give away and she picks a very special toy!!

How about you come over and just ditch all my kids toys for me? That way I can be surprised at what is gone!!
(this idea has merit ya know. I like the idea of convincing other ppl to throw/donate/whatever away some of my family's stash. Must look into Clean Sweep - Iowa edition)

I am in the process of getting DS bedroom cleared out. I am finding it hard to get rid of things because they mean something to me.

But so far I am just trying to get it done.
I have cleaned out his clothes but I am having a rough time with baby blankets. So I have told myself I can keep blankets if I get rid of other stuff.

Oh I think I should do this soon.
DS have too many things amd most of them are from last Christmas.
Since we don't see family often, when we go to Panam they get a little carry away, specially because ds birthday is also Dec 31st (las Christmas I bring a BIG suitcase full of toys).

What a great idea Mimi!! I think I will be doing that with the girls' this weekend (I think we'll be doing way more than 5 each though lol)! I'm tired of having to clean their room for them cause they make such a mess and get overwhelmed trying to pick it back up. They have way to much stuff anyway and with Christmas a few months away it will only get worse!
