Default Ways to make $$

I need some help ladies! I need to do SOMETHING to try to bring in some income, but while staying at home so I can raise my daughter. But I don't have any ideas of what. I'm totally jealous of Lindy's talent for making finger puppets, lol! (Lindy, when you set up your Etsy store, please let us know so I can buy everything first, lol!!).

I was thinking of making baby announcements, wedding invites, save-the-dates, that sort of thing. Instead of sending the physical product, I'd just email a pdf. But that seems to violate every TOU I can find about commercial use. It seems like things are okay to use for this, but then I read more carefully and it says it has to be physical product, which I assume a pdf is not considered.

I'm not very good at things like sewing (but I'm trying to get better at it), or at jewellery making, crochet or knitting. I'm looking for something that doesn't have a large overhead, you know? Any ideas?

This may not be what you're looking for, but I've been doing surveys and home tests for about a year now. So far this year (Jan-March '09) I've made about $500. Granted, $300 of that was for a week-long participation, but it really can be a fun way to earn a little extra spending money (especially if you're using it for scrapkits, which is what I do).

I hope it's ok to post this, but this is a site where I've found most of my survey companies and product testing companies. This forum has some really helpful members who seem to weed out the scams and warn you about them. Just check under "Surveys".

SlickDeals

I've also gotten TONS and I do mean TONS of freebies from that place. Everything from 432 full-size Snickers Energy bars to a whole case of Tang, plus numerous other things. Just yesterday I received two full-size packages of Pull-Ups to test out on my son.

Good luck!

OT: Slickdeals is our go-to deal spot. We've gotten so many deals from that place over the past few years.

Jade, you could be an online hooker. That's what I do in my spare time. Woot! LOL

Hey Jaedyn,

Just wanted to let you know that you can use our products to create CUSTOM cards and announcements, etc for other people and you're welcome to send the flattened printable digital file.

We do require that you only create one of a kind designs for each customer you work with and that you don't sell/advertise any ready made designs on a website where all you do is change the names, dates and event details for the various customers.

Good luck!
Robin

Oooh Jaedyn, I feel for you. I'm in the same boat, but I don't really have the courage to sell the stuff I make. I also don't want to be in a position of 'having' to get a lot done so I can't just be with my kids.
I've designed wedding announcements, baby announcements and 'mommy cards' and just printed them at a local print shop for clients. They were all friends, and it was really easy. I didn't even use scrap supplies designed by other people - a couple of vector flourishes from istockphoto and colour blocks and it was easy-peasy.

Do you ebay? One though I had for a way to make money was to advertise your services as an ebay broker. You could photograph, post and auction and ship people's stuff for them for a flat rate + % of profits. Most people I know don't know how to put their stuff up there, or are too lazy to do it. THey don't want to be bothered to check for messages or be online for closings of stuff, but if you're at home you might be able to do this.

I hope you find something, hon! We could all use a little extra $$!

Oh, Robin, that is so good to know! I have wanted to do that kind of business forever, but have never done it. One of the main reasons I haven't done it was I thought the TOUs did not allow it.

I work for ChaCha! Maybe you could do that! I'm still new at it, but it's a lot of fun and decent money once you get fast at it. (I mostly do 411 stuff and movie times, stock quotes, weather, etc...which are all fast questions to answer). The practice test wasn't hard, it was just nerve-wracking! If anyone wants to try it out and use me as a referral, PM me! I know guides who make $100+ per week doing this and they have a "pay me now" function that lets you control your payday.

I am hoping to get a job that I'm interviewing for IRL next Tuesday so I don't know if I'll keep doing it so much, but I'll do it here and there if I get a "real" job LOL.

How's your photography skillz? I've been making side money snapping pics of my friends and neighbors little ones. I charge amateur prices ($150 for 1-2 hours of shooting and a cd with 20-25 hi res images on it), I only do outdoor piccies (I'm a natural light photographer) and if you want, you can set up a store through shutterfly, instead of giving them a cd with your prints on it, they can order their prints through your shutterfly store, they give you the pro discount and you mark up your prices to what you want!

Whatever way you go, g/l!!
(Have you thought of offering your scrapping skills to kids' sports teams, class clubs, backstage tantrum tiara moms, etc?)

Bryn that sounds awesome! I didn't realize you could do that with shutterfly, what a great way to get prints made!

That's something to chew on while I play with the idea of taking photos for profit (really wanting to get into dog photography).

To feed my digital addiction, I do genealogy research for hire. It sure has helped me be able to buy goodies that I want from here that I don't get from my CT lovelies!!

So you get random questions? I'm a bit lost, lol!

Yep, today I've looked up a lot of movie times for people (factual) and decided who would win an arm wrestling match between Arnold Schwarzenneger and Carl Weathers (opinion). LOL. I have already had some doozies and I haven't been at it that long!

just wanted to add my sister has been trying really hard to get me to do these collages called comp cards for the pagents her daughter does. She said that the people who do them get like 50 dollars a piece. It is very similar to scrapbooking but more collagey (not a word LOL) then what we do. Here is a site that she showed me that does them. You could set up a site to do them and they are just emailed I believe when done.

examples of what Im talking about:

Lena - I'm so glad you brought this up. I tried to sign up about 2 months ago when a friend of mine told me she was doing it and they had closed hiring. Now they're accepting again!

Keep bringing the good ideas ladies!

What about offering in-home child care?

I left my nice-paying job almost 6 years ago to stay at home with my babies and have never looked back! I've been a child care provider for 4 years and am on my way to being a preschool teacher!

It's not for everyone, but it would be something to consider.
