Red face So Upset--Pc Issue

I am so upset right now with my pc that I can't even begin to tell you....Unless I can figure it out, I won't be able to Digital Scrap anymore....

The problem started when my pc crashed and my brother in law put Windows 2000 Professional on it....He never re-installed the drivers for the cd burner on it....Hubby bought me an EZ Dub for me to use to burn all of my fabulous Sweet Shoppe Design purchases on it....The only thing is, I "think" (because I'm not a computer expert) that I have way too much "stuff" on this pc to really run my EZ Dub....So, I'm basically stuck up ____creek without a paddle.... I have tried to figure out what I have on this pc that I can delete to free up some disk space in hopes of using my EZ Dub, but to no avail....I can't afford to buy an external harddrive right now, but I did network this pc with one my Dad just gave me....The only problem being when I try to access the files from my "newer" pc, it asks me for a Username and Password to this pc....I don't have a Username or a password and never have....

I am so close to tears and so upset with myself that I didn't try to do something before I put so many digital scrapbook kits on this pc....I guess I got caught up in shopping in Sweet Shoppe Designs every Saturday, never really thinking I'd have this problem....

I just cannot afford to re-purchase all of the kits that I have bought and I can't justify spending any more money on newer Digital Scrapkits since I feel so "wasteful"....

I haven't given up completely on trying to figure a way to transfer my files over from this pc to my "newer" pc, but until I do--or unless I do--I'll be scarce....As pathetic as I must sound, it depresses me too much to come here to see all the fabulous new kits, layouts, etc. that you are all creating....

Aww man Sheila! That stinks. I wish I had some advice for you, but since I don't use a PC I don't. All I can do is hope and pray that you can figure it out.

Thanks Paula.... I'm pathetic,
but my Digital scrapbooking is the only thing that I do for enjoyment....I love
my daughter and my two grandchildren (whom all live with us) but I'm thinking
I'm going to rip my hair out without being able to escape to my computer &
digital scrapbooking....I work 10 hour days and we are coming in to our busy
season where I will have to work a 12 hour Mandatory Overtime day each
week 'til Christmas so this is my one form of enjoyment....

I'll either figure it out or I'll give up my pc....LOL

Hmmm.....there has to be a way to make it work. Why can't you reinstall the drivers for the cd burner that's built in? Can you go into your "old" one and see what the administrator settings are? You could set the new PC to be allowed to see the old one?

Call a person in the area who fixes computers or even Best Buy and ask them what you can do. Or go onto the website for the brand of computer you have and send in a question. You can figured it out.

Are you missing the drivers or the actual program that burns things to cds? If you're only missing the program you can probably find a freebie or cheapo one online that would work for you.

You should be able to get the driver downloads from the web.....just google the name of your burning program/software.

Another thing you can do is pick up a USB stick thingy (why can't I think of the name). I saw 4GB ones at WalMart for like $20 bucks and 2GB ones for $9 bucks. It would be slow transferring stuff that way but it might let you free up some space to get your EZ Dub program working.

ETA: I just googled it and it's called a flash drive....duh...I feel like a dork

Download, install and run Crap Cleaner and free up some space on your overloaded computer. It is very simple and I guarantee you'll recover several gigs of space. That should enable you the then use your burner.

I truly appreciate each of your replies of help/suggestions....

Col, I have networked the two pc's together to share files/folders so that I can see this pc using my "newer" pc but because of that supposed Username & Password that I've never needed before, I cannot gain access to the files/folders on this pc....

My brother in law works on pc's for a living, but even when I offered to pay him for his time and trouble, he has pretty much told me he didn't know when he would get to it....Translated to mean, "I'd rather not do it"....We are not rich by any means and I cannot afford to take it to a shop to be fixed right now....

It is the drivers, because when my brother in law re-built a pc for my sister, he did the same thing to her--did not re-install the drivers on hers....I am very limited on what I know how to do with my computer, probably why I'm in the situation that I'm in right now...LOL

My sister has offered to take a look at this pc to see what she can do for me, but I really hate to let someone who has not been to school for computer repair, etc. to mess with it....There is a guy at my job I may ask to take a look at it and let me know what he would charge me to straighten this mess out....

I just do not want to lose all of the digital scrapkits I have purchased from Sweet Shoppe Designs....

Thanks so much for all of your replies/suggstions....

This 4GB one is only $12 buck @ WalMart with .97 cent shipping, but I checked and my store (in poldunk PA) carries them.....might be worth a shot!!!

If you know it's the drivers you should be able to look up what you need and download them and install them yourself.

Sheila - if you are uncomfortable doing anything tech-ish on your computer, then your best bet is the flash drive option. You can get one at walmart and move the kits from machine to machine a few at a time.

It plugs in to an open USB port on the old machine, then you move the files from the machine to the flashdrive via Explorer. Then you unplug it from the old machine, plug it in to the new machine and you can move them from the flashdrive to your new computer.

As far as a shop, I have called them before and asked for advice and they tell me what to do on my own. Same thing with the website of your computer brand.

Dh has all our computers networked together and we have to use a username and password to access the other computers...don't know if that is the case every time you network but I know in our case we HAVE to...

I used to use a flash drive for all my scrapping stuff, then it got moved to the shared drive and then eventually an EHD. They have some pretty cheap flash drives out there and you can store a lot on them!!!

Good luck!

Col, This may sound stupid, but do I search under the operating system for the drivers? I admit, I'm totally clueless....

Emmy, I think the "flash drive" might be the easiest method for me to try to transfer my scrap stuff, even if it is alittle at a time....I could do some each night when I got home from work before I go to bed....

Kim, I guess I just figured since I never used a Username and Password when I log into this pc that I wouldn't need one to "network" them, but this is not the case....When my brother in law re-built this pc and I turned it on for the very first time, it asked for a password and he said he couldn't remember it.... So he told me to hit cancel and it would bypass that, however that does not work for trying to access the files from the "newer" pc....Guess I learned something out of all of this mess....LOL

Thanks so much everyone....

what drivers do you need? Do you need the drivers for the cd drive? Or do you need a program for burning? If you need the drivers for the drive then go to control panel>device manager and look under cd/dvd drives and it will list the name of the cd drive. You can do a search online for the manufacturer and it should have drivers available for download on their site. An alternative is to go to the manufacturer of the computer and check their website for drivers.

This is what I was going to say. Just see what type of driver you need and go and find it online. Most all companies have their drivers online, I've had to do this lots of times before.
