madelyn woke up this morning with leaky ear. she had fluid leaking from her ear and she's been complaining that her cheek hurts. i'm wondering if it's her ear and she's just confused. she had a REALLY whiny day yesterday and she's typically not a whiner. she's not running a fever as of yet but she's coughing and really snotty...

I'd go today if it was me. Sounds like an ear or sinus infection.

I hope she feels better soon!

My son had a leaky ear when he was a baby - was an ear infection and I think the ear drum had burst. Definitely get her in asap.

sounds to me like her ear drum ruptured and she has a sinus infection. Id take her in as those can be pretty painful. Question though if you put cotton in the ear without the fluid (or have her cover it with say a pillow) and you talk towards the ear that is draining fluid does it sound muffled to her? If so she probably does have a ruptured ear drum. I had one almost two years ago and when it ruptured I could not hear anything out of that ear.

My eardrum ruptured as a kid and it was incredibly painful... take that poor girl in.

I'm putting my money on dh saying you shouldn't take her in. Right?

I'd take her in too. My baby's eardrums ruptured at the same time and she was in a LOT of pain.

No, she meant me...Laura asked me early this AM when Mads got up if she should take her in, and I agree with all of you and said yes...

And when I saw this thread title, I was like...man...apparently my opinion didn't count...then I read it, LOL.

I would definitely take her in. I had horrible ear infections when I was a kid, and everytime I'd wake up with a leaky ear, it turned out my ear drum had burst.

Just thought I would post a "slightly different option". My two boys got ear infections a LOT. One had tubes put in his ears. Constant antibiotics are not really good for you if you can help it. I use to take my kid to the dr., get the prescription and then run over to the chiropractor (I use one that uses an activator NOT the jerky kind but that's my preference) and she would adjust his ears. The yucky fluid would drain down their throat and I NEVER had to give them the antibiotics. I've stopped going to the dr. for ear infections. It's immediate relief. One of mine did burst their ear drum one time, but I don't think there was anything they did- they said it would heal on it's own. I would go somewhere though. Sitting up all night holding a child upright while they try to sleep is not fun. Good luck.

Just throwing this in there. Have you ever tried Hyland's Earache Tablets? They are homeopathic tablets and they have worked wonders for us. Anytime one of our kids complains of any pain in their ears, we give them some of the tablets, and the problem is solved. I swear by them. We have only had to put one of our kids on antibiotics for an ear infection once.

I'm not sure of the exact stat, but like 95% of all ear infections are viral not bacterial, so you shouldn't need antibiotics for most ear infections. But, if it's really causing a problem and has set in with a yucky infection, then I guess you don't have much choice.

You're the mama, Laura. Follow your instincts about what's best for your child.

i decided to wait and see how she is after her nap this afternoon. she hasn't been running a fever and she isn't acting sick today (other than a little more tired than normal). if she wakes up with crusty ear, i'm going to call the pedi. she's very prone to ear infections and they actually just removed her tubes when they took her tonsils out in august.

thanks for all the advice!
